Church added to Register of Landmarks and Heritage

… To assist the church in receiving the historical recognition, a class at the University of Alabama was designed to focus specifically on helping the church. Amber Newman, a UA graduate who majored in history, worked for three years to help the church receive its designation. “I began actively working with Hunter’s Chapel around the fall of 2007 along with fellow history graduate, Gabby Trimm, under the direct supervision of Kari Frederickson, director of the Summersell Center for the Study of the South,” Newman said. “Through the center, we acquired a grant that allowed us to work with the church organizing church documents, transcribing documents that dated back to the 1870s and interviewing church members to assist the church with their church’s history.” UA associate professor of history John Giggie, said he continued Frederickson’s work in the fall of 2009 and created the class…

Out of 500,000 people who tried their hands — or thumbs or index fingers — at the LG U.S. National Texting Championship, 20-year-old Reinagel is one of 32 finalists who will compete for the top prize in New York City on Sept. 19. A Spain Park High graduate who attends University of Alabama, Reinagel was watching an episode of MTV’s “The Hills” this summer when she saw an ad for the competition. At the suggestion of a friend, Reinagel decided to give it a shot…Reinagel selected the charity Laps for CF Foundation, a local organization that raises money for cystic fibrosis research.

When the Ghirardelli company launched a competition to help find a new flavor for its Intense Dark collection, the company received some 14,000 entries. It’s now down to just 3 finalists and one of them is Michele Henderson, a 43-year-old woman who moved to Alabama 3 years ago to pursue a master’s degree in advertising at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Henderson’s recipe in the “Bring Your Dark to Light” competition is for something called Tahitian Treasure, which mixes the dark chocolate with Tahitian pineapple, a hint of coconut and almonds….
