UA Engineering Scholar Named Alabama’s ASCE Student of the Year

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Lane Morrison, a senior in civil, construction and environmental engineering at The University of Alabama, was named the Student Civil Engineer of the Year by the Alabama Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

As the outstanding civil engineering student of the year, he received a $3,500 scholarship that was presented at the annual meeting of the Alabama Section of ASCE at the Wharf in Orange Beach.

Morrison, from Calera, was nominated for the student of the year award by Dr. Ken Fridley, professor and head of the civil, construction and environmental engineering department, and Dr. Mike Triche, associate professor of civil engineering and UA’s chapter adviser.

Founded in 1852, the American Society of Civil Engineers represents more than 140,000 civil engineers worldwide and is America’s oldest national engineering society.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s fully accredited College of Engineering has more than 2,700 students and more than 100 faculty. In the last eight years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater scholars, Hollings scholars and Portz scholars.
