100 Lenses captures state
Tuscaloosa News – June 15
Last week, 29 high school students from five counties spent a week on the campus of the University of Alabama as participants in the Black Belt 100 Lenses Project, learning how to take photographs and what they can reveal about daily life…The 100 Lenses project started in 2007 in Sumter County as a joint endeavor between the Black Belt Community Foundation and the UA Center for Community-Based Partnerships. It has since expanded into six other counties. Until this year, the program was conducted during a semester with meetings over several weeks. This year’s camp format is a pilot for what the organizers hope will be an annual event. “The goals and the objectives are still the same,” said Whitney Green, arts coordinator of the Black Belt Community Foundation and one of the directors of the project. Six metro Birmingham high school students attend University of Alabama summer Institute

A dozen Alabama high school students, including six from metro Birmingham, are on the University of Alabama campus this week participating in the 2010 SUPER Emerging Scholars summer institute, the university reports. The program is a joint effort of the school’s College of Arts and Sciences and the Alabama Humanities Foundation. The program gives students who will be juniors and seniors in the coming school year “specialized academic enrichment in history, literature and the arts, with a focus on critical thinking and writing skills,” according to the University.

… According to some community college observers, the for-profit growth trend is being fueled not only by the economic downturn, but also by the shrinking budgets afflicting colleges…Amid these realities, the geometric growth of institutions like the University of Phoenix Online should come as no surprise, said Stephen G. Katsinas, director of the Education Policy Center at the University of Alabama. “It is the logical outcome of the long-term disinvestment in public higher education at all levels,” Katsinas said. “If you did an overlay mapping where the new proprietaries are located, my bet is that they have grown at precisely the locations where demand has grown the most, and that have simultaneously suffered most from the long term state disinvestment in public higher education.” Katsinas said that in a 2009 policy center survey, 34 of 48 responding states reported that community college budgets had been cut in mid-year. Four of five states reported that community college tuition had been increased …

Saban statue to be completed within 2 weeks

Sculptors expect to finish a bronze statue of University of Alabama head football coach Nick Saban, planned for placement on the Walk of Champions plaza outside Bryant-Denny Stadium, within two weeks…Moore has said the unveiling of the statue, planned for August, will also serve as a dedication for the south end zone expansion that will push the stadium’s capacity to more than 100,000. The project is being funded by the Crimson Tide Foundation, according to documents released by UA. The final price is not yet available, although the price for the Saban statue is estimated at $50,000. A resolution on the sculpture, as well as a national championship plaque for the stadium’s North Entrance Plaza, will be addressed at the UA board of trustees meeting on Thursday. According to a letter from the university’s Office of Financial Affairs to UA President Robert Witt, the statue will be 150 percent life-sized and will stand on a granite pedestal with a chamfered edge …
