UA Students Donate Record Amount to Give-N-Go Program

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Moving out for the summer was made a little easier for students at The University of Alabama through the Give-N-Go program, sponsored by Housing & Residential Communities and the Community Service Center.

The Give-N-Go program collected students’ unwanted items, which were in turn donated to the Hannah Home. The Hannah Homes are residential facilities located in Tuscaloosa, Shelby and Jefferson Counties where women and children fleeing domestic violence can find hope and regain their independence.

During the last weeks of spring classes, students could donate their items to any of 16 different locations all housed in the on-campus residential communities.

This year, a total of 35,040 pounds of goods was collected, the largest donation the Hannah Home has received from this type of project, says Josh Burford, CSC coordinator of freshman community outreach.

“In the three years I have been working with colleges and coordinating Give-N-Go programs across the state with various schools, we have never received this high of an amount from any other college. This is a huge success and something that we are very proud of and the University should take great pride in!” says Brooke Story, community outreach coordinator of Hannah Home.

Items ranging from couches to chairs to electronics were all collected for the program.

“I think that students really like the idea that they have the option of giving to people who are in need while at the same time making their move home that much smoother. This merchandise goes directly towards helping people in need either through direct donations or through monetary donations when the items go into thrift stores for resale,” Burford says.

Food items collected during the Give-N-Go program were given to the West Alabama Food Bank for distribution.
