‘Top Kill:’ Engineers Try to Control Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill; Louisiana Asks for More Help
ABC World News (online version) – May 26
A top kill has never been tried 5,000 feet underwater, where the leak began April 20… BP and government officials said it might be days before they know whether the operation has worked. The plan is to pump enough mud into the well to overcome the flow of oil. If it succeeds, they would then use cement to try to seal the well permanently. “The difficulty with this is that to kill the well, the mud they’re pumping in has to fill the well and create a hydrostatic pressure,” said Philip Johnson of the University of Alabama in an interview with ABC News. “Now, let me not be misleading. What you might see is oil being replaced by mud out of the top of the well,” he said, “and as long as there is flow, you can’t be sure that it was stopped.”
U.S. News & World Report MBA Rankings Survey to Include GRE(R)
Yahoo Finance – May 26
… About 50 percent of our students come from non-business undergraduate programs, such as science, law and engineering,” says Blake Bedsole, Director of Admissions and Student Services at Manderson Graduate School of Business, University of Alabama. “We’ve found that these students prefer to take the GRE test so that they can apply to other graduate and professional programs. In fact, 25 percent of last year’s class opted to take the GRE instead of the GMAT. Accepting GRE scores allows us to be much more flexible in our recruitment efforts, and that’s a good thing for our program and the students.”
