What’s really old is new again after renovation at Alabama’s Moundville Archeological Park

Curators are putting the final touches on a $5 million renovation of the museum at Moundville Archeological Park that will more than triple the number of artifacts on display, museum and park officials said Tuesday…The Jones Archeological Museum is scheduled to reopen May 15, and will display about 250 artifacts, including an ornate stone bowl archeologists have said is arguably the most significant prehistoric artifact ever found in the United States, said Bill Bomar, director of the park and museum. “It was found here 100 years ago and hasn’t been back in Alabama since,” Bomar said…Owned by the University of Alabama, the park includes 28 earthen mounds that carbon dating indicates were built around 1200 A.D…

…”It will be a landmark on campus and a place that people will be able to visit,” university planner Dan Wolfe told News reporter Hannah Wolfson…While some would prefer to pretend events like this never happened, that is not possible and, in our view, it’s not even desirable. Better to acknowledge our history — warts and all — and to recognize the value of the places and symbols that are surviving monuments to that history. Wallace indeed stood in the door of Foster Auditorium, but Malone and Hood ultimately joined UA’s student body anyway, and down the road, many more black students followed. These are the historical facts, and they are facts worth remembering. The University of Alabama should be congratulated for making sure they are remembered in style.
Bus route planned to boost football parking downtown

…Mayor Walt Maddox proposed a new bus route Tuesday that would run between the city’s new intermodal facility and Bryant-Denny Stadium for University of Alabama football games. Tuesday afternoon in the front yard of the Gorgas House, rows of chairs awaited an audience of newly elected SGA senators, executive council members, and the SGA president, who were inaugurated into office as the former members relinquished their tenure. James Fowler, the elected president for the 2010-11 academic year, delivered a speech to an audience of SGA members, their families and administrative employees…Kathleen Cramer, senior associate vice president for student affairs, recognized the SGA officers of Oliver’s administration, and Tim Hebson, dean of students, handed the awards to the various officers as they walked to the platform to be honored…
