Students participate in new chess program at magnet school

UA students will be teaching chess to sixth graders at the new Tuscaloosa City School district magnet school. The UA Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility partnered with the Freedom Chess Academy, a local nonprofit organization, to begin the Every Move Counts: A Chess in Education project. “This is one of the first programs of its kind in the country, and we’re excited about its potential,” said Stephen Black, director of the Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility…

UA dorms receive energy efficiency rating

Several UA residence halls have received an Energy Star rating for energy efficiency this year. Energy Star is a government-backed program that helps businesses and institutions achieve premium efficiency across the board. The Riverside and Lakeside residential communities are the first dormitory facilities in the state to receive this rating. Alicia Browne, associate director for information and communication with housing and residential communities, said energy efficiency has been a long-term goal for HRC and that the buildings were designed with energy efficiency in mind…Some students agree that energy conservation is important for campus housing facilities. Elizabeth Junkin, a senior majoring in chemical engineering, said she is glad the University is working to make housing “green.” “Energy conservation…helps better the world we live in as well as saves money,” Junkin said. “The latter would especially be important for college dorms because it could help cut the cost of living in the dorms, which would help financially struggling students. I’m glad I live in a relatively ‘green’ facility because it lets me know that the dorms are doing something that could better the world for upcoming generations.”…

UA astronomer talks about possibility of sending men to Mars

University of Alabama astronomy professor Dr. Jimmy Irwin says the biggest challenge for the journey to Mars is keeping a crew sane and safe. “Current estimates using current rocketry would be at least 6 months there and 6 months back, so you’re talking a bare minimum of one year using a very small capsule with zero gravity.”…

Documentary highlights cultural diversity on campus

As a part of Crimson Culture Week, the UA Intercultural Council is hosting a free documentary screening at 7 p.m. tonight in the Ferguson Center Theater. The screening will be followed by a free cultural dining experience in Fresh Foods that will feature authentic cuisine from about 20 countries…The 30-minute, four-part documentary will feature live performances between each section break. The performers will include a spoken word artist, Show Choir, a dance from a member of the dance department and a band, said Lizzie Yarbrough, a senior majoring in public relations and a member of the nine-person team working to make Crimson Culture Week possible…

Exhibit Honors Paul Jones

Jones was a native of Bessemer who collected more than 1,700 pieces of art, many from artists before they were well known. Jones died earlier this year at 81. He donated almost all his work to institutions including the University of Alabama…

Relay for Life honors survivors, remembers lost

…The opening ceremonies for Relay For Life will begin Saturday at 2 p.m. Fifty-three teams are registered, but anyone can attend…Before the festivities on the soccer field, an annual survivors luncheon will be held at noon in the Rec Center’s social activity room. The luncheon is for survivors connected to the University to come for a meal and to bring a guest as a way to honor the survivors and bond with one another through commonalities. “Survivors show and enjoy each other’s company. They have just this one thing in common, and this is a way to honor them and do something special,” said Andres Pena, UA Relay For Life co-chairman…
