Campus Scholars, Leaders Recognized at UA Honors Day

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama honored its top students of 2009-2010 for their academic achievement and leadership Friday, April 9, during the Tappings and Awards Ceremony, the highlight of UA’s annual Honors Week, April 5-9.

Outstanding Student Awards for each class were presented to:

Outstanding Freshman – Austin J. Collins of Amissville, Va.

Outstanding Sophomore – Nicole Bohannon of Sheffield

Outstanding Junior – Mark Baker Smith of Aliceville

Outstanding Senior – Laura Lynne Dover of Jasper

Outstanding Transfer Students – Samuel Flowers and Edward Mostoller, both of Birmingham

Outstanding Graduate Students – Anita Mixon, Xin “Thomas” Yang and Abigayl Perelman, all of Tuscaloosa

Recipients of UA’s 2010 Premier Awards were recognized. These top awards include the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, the William P. Bloom Scholarship Award, the John Fraser Ramsey Award, the Morris Lehman Mayer Award and the Dr. Catherine J. Randall Award.

This year’s Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award was presented to one man and one woman of the graduating class and one non-student who has been helpful to and associated with the University. The Sullivan Award recognizes excellence of character and service to humanity. Student winners of this year’s Sullivan Award are Wilson Boardman of Homewood and Kendra N. Key of Tuscaloosa. Dr. Judith Bonner, UA executive vice president and provost, is the non-student recipient.

The William P. Bloom Scholarship Award honors a junior who has improved intergroup relations within the University community; this year’s winner is Olesea Volosin of Troy.

The John Fraser Ramsey Award, named in honor of the late University history professor emeritus, recognizes in a junior the versatility of gifts and excellence in mind and character that have traditionally been the goals of a liberal education. The recipient of the Ramsey Award is Paul Benton Atchison of Montgomery.

The Morris Lehman Mayer Award is named in honor of the late professor, a beloved UA teacher and a guiding force in student life. The award recognizes integrity, selfless service and leadership at UA and in the community while making significant contributions to student life. The student recipient of the Mayer Award is Elizabeth Jones of Birmingham and the non-student recipient is Dr. James C. Hall, director of UA New College.

The Catherine Johnson Randall Award, named for the former director of UA’s innovative Computer-Based Honors Program, is given to a graduating senior. The Randall Award recognizes the most outstanding student scholar at UA, based on GPA, rigor of course study and extraordinary scholarly or creative endeavor. Ynhi Thi Thai of Long Beach, Miss., a chemical engineering major with a minor in chemistry, is this year’s recipient of the Randall Award.

The Frances S. Summersell Award, sponsored by UA’s Iota Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, was given to Dr. Judith Bonner, UA executive vice president and provost. Established in 1992, this award recognizes an individual or individuals who have aided the educational mission of the University and improved the quality of life in the state.

Dr. Joab Thomas and Dr. Roger Sayers, former UA presidents, were named recipients of the 2009-2010 ODK Living Legend Award in recognition of their contributions to the goals and ideals of higher education.

The Walter R. Guyton Student Service Award was presented to Carolyn Fulmer, program assistant to the UA Student Government Association. The Guyton Award recognizes outstanding commitment to the service of UA students.

The University’s Amanda Grace Taylor Watson Distinctive Image Award, given by the UA Capstone Men and Women organization, was presented to Kevin F. Almond, associate athletic director, UA Intercollegiate Athletics. The award, named in memory of former Capstone Woman Amanda Grace Taylor Watson, is given to persons who exemplify the essence of the University in all aspects of life.

The National Alumni Association recognizes and honors one male and one female in the senior class to receive the Alumni Student Award. The recipients of the 2010 Alumni Student Award are Laura Lynne Dover of Jasper and Milton Tarrell Nettles of Monroeville.

The 2010 Alumni Outstanding Senior Award winners are: Kalen Berry of Tuscaloosa, Leah A. Bruchis of Tuscaloosa, Susan Michelle DeLeon, Nic Gulas of Hoover, Kendra N. Key of Tuscaloosa, S. Kyle Lee of Tuscaloosa, Dana Lewis of Huntsville, John Carmichael Ricketts of Birmingham, Jonathan Morris Simon of Birmingham and Stacey Summerville of Huntsville.

UA Black Scholar Awards recognizing high academic achievement included:

The Sandral Hullett Award was presented to freshmen Trakayla Brown of Tuscaloosa, David Daniels of Pleasant Grove, Whitney Davis of Huntsville, Keyannah Holloway of Montgomery, Wesley Ingram of Smiths, Shanae Logan of Hueytown, Courtney McCall of Montgomery, Stacy Paige of Tuscaloosa, Jacquelyn Putts of Oberlin, Ohio, Lakita Scott of Tuscaloosa, Naomi Thompson of Newburgh, Ind., Nicolas Tinker of Ralph, Chelsea Tucker of Pelham, Erika Wade of Centerpoint and Lillian Williams of Bay Minette

The Earnestine Tucker Award was presented to sophomores Hisham Ali of Muscle Shoals, Camilla Armstead of Montgomery, Chelsea Chatman of Opelika, Courtney Green of Tuscaloosa, Mellonee Johnson of Hueytown, Latifah Rasheed of Pine Lake, Ga., and Whitney Wilson of Alpine.

The Archie Wade Award was presented to juniors David Fernandez of San Ramon, Calif., and Desiree Mahr of Belleville, Ill. The Cleophus Thomas Award was presented to seniors Iesha Ellerbe of Tuscaloosa, Jessica Hatcher of Tuscaloosa, Adrienne Haywood of Tuscaloosa, Rachell Mill of Montgomery, Elyse Love of Bessemer, Nylyn Oubre of LaPlace, La., Brandi Powe of Mobile, Alicia Sharper of Tuscaloosa and Marlon Trone of Locust Grove, Ga.

Angel Everett of Tuscaloosa was recognized as the recipient of the Vivian Malone Jones Endowed Scholarship and Kimberly Agee of Columbiana was recognized as recipient of the Autherine Lucy Foster Endowed Scholarship. Tammy Summerville of Huntsville was recognized as the recipient of the Joffre and Zadie B. Whisenton Award, Rudy Haris was recognized as the recipient of the John England Award, Joshua Summerville of Tuscaloosa was recognized as the recipient of the African-American Alumni Network Scholarship, and Amy Dagley was recognized as the recipient of the James A. Hood Endowed Scholarship.

Blue Key Honor Fraternity – Blue Key was one of the first honor societies at the University. Blue Key members are selected during the spring semester of the junior year and must represent high scholastic ideals, leadership and diversity of background. Selection is one of the highest honors bestowed on rising seniors.
