Census forms received in the mail should be completed and mailed back to the U.S. Census Bureau by April 1. Students must complete their own forms. The UA housing office will also distribute census forms to all campus dorms, collect the completed forms and turn them in to the Census Bureau. Nominations for the Penny Allen Award are due March 31 at noon. Completed forms should be submitted to 356 Student Ferguson Center or Box 870292. The award recognizes one student and one non-student who have made significant contributions to student life at UA. Nominees should demonstrate the following criteria in order of importance: service and dedication to students, leadership activities, professional and other activities, and lack of past recognition. Nominated students must have at least 3.0 grade point averages and be incoming juniors or seniors. Nominations can be found at http://ferguson.ua.edu/forms.html. Parking registration for students for 2010-11 began March 22. The timeframe for students to register for parking is the same as their timeframe to register for classes. Students who register as soon as possible during their registration time will receive priority based on class hours completed. Please note that some zones have changed. The individual events team portion of the Alabama Forensic Council will hold open auditions for new members on Thursday, April 22, from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. and on Friday, April 23, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in 226 Reese Phifer Hall. The individual events team has ranked in the top 10 programs in the country over the past 15 years. Interested students should register for an audition time at 210-A Reese Phifer Hall before April 22. For the audition, students should be prepared to make a speech or presentation they have done in the past or present a reading of literature. Capstone International is accepting applications for the global studies certificate program, which requires only 15 credit hours to complete. Undergraduates will achieve a greater global perspective and awareness through a variety of international studies courses. Undergraduate Parent Support is initiating Sitters for Service, a pilot program for providing free baby-sitting services to students with children. Sitters for Service seeks undergraduate and graduate students to volunteer for these services in exchange for community service hours. Pick up an application at the Office of the Dean of Students in 230 Ferguson Student Center or e-mail Jason Doblin.

The UA Writing Center offers free help with your writing. The center is located in 322 Lloyd Hall. It is open Monday–Thursday, 8 a.m.–6 p.m.; Friday, 8 a.m.–3 p.m.; and Sunday, 1– 6 p.m. More information: http://www.as.ua.edu/writingcenter.

EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

Training sessions to learn how to navigate the new digital collection “Archive of Americana and World Newspaper Archive” will be March 30 and 31 in the Osburn Room in Gorgas Library. RSVP to Jill Grogg at 348-7994.

Please join Dr. Mark Nelson, vice president for student affairs and vice provost, for the Academic Honor Council induction ceremony on April 8 at 5 p.m. in the Ferguson Student Center Ballroom at 5 p.m. A reception will immediately follow the ceremony.

The Women’s Resource Center will host the Healing the Wounded Heart art exhibit opening and reception on April 1 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Kentuck Art Gallery in downtown Northport in coordination with Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Attendees will have the chance to create their own “heART” piece for the exhibit during Kentuck’s Art Night at the reception. The event is free to all students, faculty, staff and community members. The Community Service Center will send a group of volunteers to help build a house for Habitat for Humanity in Greensboro, Ala., on April 10. The 2nd annual Rise and Shine Charity Golf Tournament will be held April 26. The Student Alumni Association and Alpha Tau Omega fraternity are co-hosting the event. Tournament proceeds will benefit UA’s RISE School and Student Leadership Scholarships sponsored by the SAA. Entry fees are $100 for current UA students; $125 per golfer; and $500 per four-person team. Visit http://saa.ua.edu/golftournament.html for more information and to register. Registration deadline for golfers is April 4.

A Wilderness First Responder course will be held at the Student Recreation Center May 17–27. Stonehearth Open Learning Opportunities provides a definitive course in medical training for outdoor educators, guides, and search and rescue teams. The course will teach all of the essential skills required to assess and manage medical problems in the backcountry. More information: Lance Haynie at 348-4701.

Dr. Julie Hedgepeth Williams will present a lecture on her new book, “Wings of Opportunity: The Wright Brothers in Montgomery, Alabama,” on April 8 at 3 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. The book chronicles the short life of the first civilian American flight school, which the Wright brothers established in Montgomery in 1910. Williams is a doctoral graduate of UA’s College of Communication and Information Sciences and a professor of journalism at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala.
