Chief Justice Roberts visits Alabama law students

U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts is visiting Alabama. Roberts will speak to law students at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa on Tuesday afternoon. Aside from a lecture, he will also answer questions from students. Roberts will be the ninth U.S. Supreme Court justice since to speak at the Alabama law school since 1996. His visit is part of a lecture series that was established by U.S. District Judge William Harold Albritton III of Montgomery.

UA holds SGA elections today

University of Alabama students will vote today to choose their student body president. In fact, it is their only day to vote. Voting begins and ends today for Student Government Association offices, the first time since anyone can remember elections were contained to one day. As they did a year ago, students will vote online. This year, however, Elections Board members decided to shrink 40 continuous hours of voting to 12 hours, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. “We just decided it was entirely too long,” said Kelli Knox-Hall, one of two staff members with the Ferguson Center who directs student election board business. “It put a real strain on our resources and on what we could realistically do.”…

Birmingham job market could improve by spring, survey says

…Ahmad Ijaz, a researcher for the University of Alabama, said he doesn’t expect Birmingham or Alabama’s job picture to improve until this fall at the earliest. “Small businesses generally do not start hiring until they are very sure about the economic recovery,” he said. “They have also become more efficient over the last couple of years and may not need to add all of the workers that they laid off.”

Birmingham gas prices rising; $3 per gallon likely

… “This is the highest oil prices have been in a long time and gasoline prices are a direct reflection of the cost of crude,” said Peter Clark, an associate professor of chemical engineering at the University of Alabama who follows the petroleum markets.  Clark said he believes speculators are driving up the cost of crude, betting that the U.S. economy is bouncing back from the deepest recession in decades. Crude is also on the rise due to the typical boost in demand as spring break and the peak summer driving season approach, he said…
