Mercedes launching UA program

Mercedes-Benz U.S. International Inc. is launching a graduate fellowship program at the University of Alabama. The new program will give graduate students an opportunity to learn about leadership and management principles at the large automotive manufacturing plant in Vance, the automaker said in a news release. Mercedes and UA leaders are scheduled to unveil details and take questions about the program during a press conference at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Ferguson Center on UA’s Tuscaloosa campus. Officials attending are Ola Kaellenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz U.S. International Inc.; Robert E. Witt, president of the University of Alabama; Barry Mason, dean of the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Chuck Karr, dean of the College of Engineering.
Student secures $10,000 donation for Red Cross

Thanks to the efforts of one UA student, the University Community Service Center presented a $10,000 donation to the West Alabama Chapter of the American Red Cross Tuesday. The band Three Doors Down’s charity The Better Life Foundation gave the donation. The Better Life Foundation is a nonprofit organization that focuses on helping children and young adults. The donation will go directly to supporting the crisis in Haiti. Tray Smith, a freshman majoring in economics, secured the donation and was the point person in presenting the donation…Josh Burford, coordinator of freshman community outreach in the community service center, said the total fundraising, including the donation from Three Doors Down, has accumulated to more than $12,000. “The donation that they are receiving is the largest single donation that they have ever received from a student in the SEC,” Burford said..

The 2009-10 recipients of the Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship were honored at a luncheon Tuesday afternoon in Smith Hall. The scholarship program gives financial aid to select Alabama students who are the first members of their immediate families to attend a college…This year’s UA recipients were Yi Chen, Tyler Clark, Hannah Diane Carter, Denzel Evans-Bell, Paige M. Henderson, Jeremy J. Jordan, Lindsey Rebecca Lowe, Donald Wayne Merren, Joshua Moncrief, Mark Ryan Renaud, Lauren Grace Renfroe and Amanda Nicole Robinson. “We’re very proud of them,” said Kim Gentry, director of corporate and foundation relations. “It’s a wonderful class, very diverse.” The scholarship is made possible by a $1 million gift from the Coca-Cola Foundation to the University’s “Our Students. Greeks compete for charity

Monday kicked off the University’s annual Greek Week, a weeklong event in which sororities and fraternities come together to compete in games and events while simultaneously raising money for charities.
