TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Works from The University of Alabama’s Paul R. Jones Collection of American Art will be on display Feb. 16-18 in Montgomery at the Alabama State House.
The artwork will be exhibited in the sixth floor lobby of the Alabama State House, located on 11 South Union Street behind the historic State Capitol. The public may view the artwork from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
A brief presentation about the works on display will be given by Dr. Robert Olin, dean of the UA College of Arts and Sciences, and Dr. Amalia Amaki, curator of the collection, on Feb. 18 at 9:45 a.m. in the House of Representatives chamber. Guests can watch the presentation from the House Gallery.
Among the 12 artists featured in the exhibit are Romare Bearden, Gwendolyn Knight and Prentice Herman (P.H.) Polk.
The Paul R. Jones Collection of American Art, which includes more than 1,700 pieces of art and is valued at $5 million, was donated to UA in October 2008 by the late Paul Raymond Jones of Atlanta. It is one of the world’s largest collections of 20th century African-American Art.
As Jones wished, it is being used at UA as a teaching collection and is being exhibited in galleries on the UA campus and at other educational institutions and venues.
The College of Arts and Sciences is the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state. Students from the College have won numerous national awards including Rhodes scholarships, Goldwater scholarships and memberships on the “USA Today” Academic All-American Teams.
