EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

The Second Annual Scholarship Date Auction will be Feb. 11 at the Zone in Bryant Denny Stadium. Doors will open at 6 p.m.; the auctioning will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $2 and can be purchased until 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 11. Cash or Bama cash is accepted at the gate. Your ticket will enter you in a chance to win door prizes or a scholarship, and you may purchase up to three additional raffle tickets for $1 each to increase your chances of winning. Proceeds from ticket sales and bids go toward student scholarships. The event is hosted by the Student Government Association and the National Society of Black Engineers. Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week will be Feb. 11-18. Events include a kick-off benefit concert at Jupiter Bar & Grill; two brown-bag lunches, one with Stephen Black, director of the Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility, and the other with the director of Tuscaloosa’s HOPE Initiative; a Hunger Banquet; and the “‘Grate’ American Sleep Out.” Visit http://volunteer.ua.edu for a complete schedule. UA women’s gymnastics will host the University of Florida on Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Coleman Coliseum. Students get in free with their Action Cards. Get there early to get a Ten Troupe T-shirt.

UA women’s tennis will host Georgia State on Feb. 13 at noon at the Tennis Stadium. Students get in free with their Action Cards.

UA women’s softball will host Missouri on Feb. 13 at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. and on Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. Students get in free with their Action Cards.

UA Sports Clubs will host the Holiday Hustle 5K run around campus on Feb. 13 at 9 a.m. This event will benefit the Epilepsy Foundation. The entry fee is $25 up until the day of the race at 8:45 a.m. T-shirts will be provided for participants. Volunteers are needed. Registration forms can be picked up at the Student Recreation Center.

UA Intercollegiate Athletics is hosting two events this month to raise awareness of and support for breast cancer research. Pink luminaries will light the paths to Coleman Coliseum prior to the Power of Pink women’s basketball game with Tennessee on Feb. 18 and the Power of Pink women’s gymnastics meet with Arizona on Feb. 19. DCH Foundation Inc. is selling the luminaries in memory or honor of loved ones. The luminaries are $10 each and can be purchased using the order form at the DCH Health System Web site. All members of the UA community are encouraged to wear pink on Feb. 18 and Feb. 19 and at both sporting events. More information: Intercollegiate Athletics’ Web site.

Capstone Hero award nominations are being accepted at http://leadership.ua.edu until 4 p.m. on Feb. 12. Nominations should be for individuals or groups who serve as living examples that inspire and challenge us as a community to live up to the principles of integrity within the Capstone Creed. Nominations must be turned in to the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership (355 Ferguson Center) or e-mailed to charris@sa.ua.edu.

The National Student Speech Language Hearing Association at UA is making health kits for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. The following items should be placed in a sealed, one-gallon plastic bag: one hand towel (no kitchen towels); one washcloth; one comb (large and sturdy, not pocket-sized); one nail file or fingernail clippers (no emery boards or toenail clippers); one bath-sized bar of soap (30 oz. or larger); one toothbrush (single only in wrapper); six adhesive, plastic sterile Band-Aids; $1 to purchase toothpaste. If you prefer to donate $10-$15, make checks payable to NSSHLA. Items are due Feb. 12 to the Speech and Hearing Center located in the old Capstone Medical Center building at 700 University Blvd. East. More information: Raven Bennett.

The Graduate School is accepting Last Lecture nominations until Feb. 19. Undergraduate students, graduate students and alumni are invited to nominate the UA faculty member they would most like to hear lecture on the following premise: “If this were your last chance to talk to a group of UA students, what would you say to them?” Online nomination form: http://graduate.ua.edu/events/lastlecture.html. UA students interested in a new, five-week marine science research internship this summer in the Caribbean should apply by Feb. 26 by completing an application at http://www.bsc.ua.edu. One undergraduate and one graduate student will be selected for the internship opportunity on the Bay Island of Roatan, which is off the northern coast of Honduras. Applications are available for Pinnacle Non-Traditional Honor Society. Students who are at least 25 and who are either undergraduates with a 3.0 or higher grade point average or graduates with a 3.4 or higher GPA are eligible to apply. The Elliott Society is accepting applications for membership. The society recognizes students, faculty and alumni who have made significant leadership contributions to the campus, community, state and nation in areas of social and cultural progress and who portray a spirit of the ideals held by Carl Elliott. Elliott was a former SGA president who later became a U.S. congressman. Applications are available online. Deadline: March 5. More information: Korey Hayes.

UA’s Up ’til Dawn program is now accepting applications for its executive board. As members of the executive board, students will work closely with their peers to plan the Up ’til Dawn event and raise awareness about St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. To participate in the conference, undergraduate students must register their projects by submitting an application form and abstract describing their projects by March 8. The Student Recreation Center upper (south) parking lot will now be accessible to all parking permits throughout all monitored periods as part of a pilot program for the spring semester. Residence hall students are encouraged to utilize this opportunity to access the SRC during less-crowded times of the day.

UA has implemented a new policy regulating the use of UA grounds and facilities. The UA Office of Information Technology warns that an e-mail scam was recently sent to UA faculty, staff and student accounts. The scam e-mail requests usernames and passwords for Bama e-mail account upgrades. The message is a phishing scam used to get login information, which will be used by the scammers to hijack user e-mail accounts. Do not click the link or reply with usernames and passwords. Delete the message and take no action. Persons who have already replied to the message should change their passwords immediately. More information: OIT HelpDesk.
