EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

Student Government Association President Steven Oliver will deliver the State of the School address on Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. in the Ferguson Student Center Theater.

UA men’s basketball will host the University of Florida on Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. in Coleman Coliseum. All students get in free with their Action Cards. Free Crimson Chaos shirts will be available.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council will conduct a makeup convocation session on Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. in 301 Ferguson Center. NPHC convocation is mandatory for any student wishing to participate in membership intake for any of the eight organizations represented by NPHC in the spring semester. In coordination with African-American Heritage Month, Dr. Bebe Barefoot, an English instructor at UA, will discuss her exploration of lyrics in traditional blues songs performed by 20th century black female singers on Feb. 3 at 12:30 p.m. in 308 Manly Hall. The lecture is the second in a semester-long series of Brown Bag Lectures sponsored by the Women’s Resource Center and women’s studies in the department of gender and race studies. UA men’s tennis will host Tulane on Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. at the Tennis Stadium. All students get in free with their Action Cards.

UA women’s basketball will host Auburn on Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. at Coleman Coliseum. All students get in free with their Action Cards.

The University Union will host the “God Grew Tired of Us” event series on Feb. 7 and 8 in the Ferguson Center game room. The event will feature both a documentary screening and book discussion of “God Grew Tired of Us.” The documentary screening will be held on Feb. 7 at 7 p.m., and the book discussion will be Feb. 8 at 3:30 p.m. Both events are free to the public. Students wishing to participate can sign up in the University Programs office on the bottom floor of Ferguson Center. The first 20 students to sign up will receive a free copy of the book.

UA Sports Clubs will host the Holiday Hustle 5K run around campus on Feb. 13 at 9 a.m. This event will benefit the Epilepsy Foundation. The entry fee is $25 up until the day of the race at 8:45 a.m. T-shirts will be provided for participants. Volunteers are needed. Registration forms can be picked up at the Student Recreation Center.

The Susan and Gaylon McCollough Medical Scholars Forum will be held Feb. 5 and 6 at Shelby Hall. High school students, UA faculty and current UA students will discuss the relationship of the humanities and social science to a successful medical practice. The forum will feature Dr. Arnold “Gil” Diethelm, a longtime surgeon and medical pioneer for organ transplantation. All students are invited.

The Student Recreation Center upper (south) parking lot will now be accessible to all parking permits throughout all monitored periods as part of a pilot program for the spring semester. Residence hall students are encouraged to utilize this opportunity to access the SRC during less-crowded times of the day.

UA has implemented a new policy regulating the use of UA grounds and facilities. The UA Office of Information Technology warns that an e-mail scam was recently sent to UA faculty, staff and student accounts. The scam e-mail requests usernames and passwords for Bama e-mail account upgrades. The message is a phishing scam used to get login information, which will be used by the scammers to hijack user e-mail accounts. Do not click the link or reply with usernames and passwords. Delete the message and take no action. Persons who have already replied to the message should change their passwords immediately. ESPN internships are available for UA students. The deadline to apply is Feb. 15. Those interested in applying must be currently enrolled students in good academic standing who plan on graduating in December 2010 or May 2011. UA students interested in a new, five-week marine science research internship this summer in the Caribbean should apply by Feb. 26 by completing an application at http://www.bsc.ua.edu. One undergraduate and one graduate student will be selected for the internship opportunity on the Bay Island of Roatan, which is off the northern coast of Honduras. Free room and board will be provided to the selected students; all other costs are the responsibility of the students. Capstone Hero award nominations are being accepted at http://leadership.ua.edu until 4 p.m. on Feb. 12. The UA community is invited to submit nominations for individuals or groups who serve as living examples that inspire and challenge us as a community to live up to the principles of integrity within the Capstone Creed. Nominations must be turned in to the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership (355 Ferguson Center) or e-mailed to charris@sa.ua.edu.

Share your ADHD story. Researchers on campus are looking for students with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder to share their experiences regarding safety, relationships, stress management, health and other topics. Please respond to uaadhd@gmail.com by Feb. 17 if interested.

The Capstone Drive entrance to Gorgas Library has reopened.

The Student Health Center is now open at 8 a.m. on Thursdays.

The contact telephone number previously provided for UA’s annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference was incorrect. The contact person for more information is Richard Mocarski, and his telephone number is 348-7163. To participate in the conference, undergraduate students must register their projects by submitting an application form and abstract describing their projects by March 8. UA students can participate with Haiti relief efforts. The UA Writing Center is open for the spring semester. Hours of operation are Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.; Friday, 8 a.m.-3 p.m.; and Sunday, 1-6 p.m. Appointments are available; walk-ins are always welcome. Last Lecture nominations are being accepted until Feb. 19. Creative Campus needs art submissions from student artists of any major for the Alabama Art Display Project. Several buildings on campus will be enhanced with artwork created by UA students. The exhibition of artwork will begin on the UA campus in the spring semester. If student artists are interested in selling their work, they should include a sale price as well as their contact information. Each work must be submitted to Maxwell Hall with an “Alabama Art Display Waiver” that can be found on the Creative Campus Web site at http://creativecampus.ua.edu. More information: Amanda Barnes.

H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccines are available. The Student Health Center is offering the H1N1 flu vaccine injection at the clinic during normal hours of operation by either walk-in or appointment (348-2778) at no cost to University students. The Student Health Center also has a limited quantity of seasonal flu shots available for a nominal fee. Most health insurances do pay for the flu shot, but check with your insurer.

If you have flu-like symptoms or think you may have been exposed to swine flu, visit the Student Health Center (no appointment necessary).
