UA Researcher Looks at Shark Skin

FDIC: State loses 7,000 banking jobs between 2008 and 2009

…While job losses in Alabama’s financial industry are far less than the more than 22,000 jobs axed in manufacturing, finance-related jobs typically pay higher wages, which could have a further-reaching economic impact on the state, said Ahmad Ijaz, economist at the University of Alabama’s Center for Business and Economic Research. For example, research shows that for every $70,000-salary job lost within the state, Alabama’s economy could miss out on $112,000 in taxes and spending, according to a formula developed by the U.S. Department of Commerce.” It has a fairly large impact because it is a sector that pays well,” Ijaz said…
Top officers earn honors

…UAPD Sgt. Daniel Sanford has obtained an unprecedented number of indictments for the department, Chief Steve Tucker wrote. In one investigation, he helped apprehend the subject of a multistate investigation, bringing closure to cases in several Southeastern states. “No instance is ever too small or too seemingly hopeless to garner less than his best,” Tucker wrote. Sanford was a reserve deputy for the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office from 2002 to 2005. He began work as a sworn officer at UAPD in February 2005 and was promoted to sergeant in 2009…
