UA conference tackles emerging area of study: Latinos in the South
Birmingham News – Feb. 20
Scholars from across the country came together Friday at the University of Alabama to discuss their research on Latinos in the South, for a conference that organizers called the first of its kind in the state and one of few such events in the nation…Michael Innis Jimenez, a UA professor in American Studies who organized Friday’s event, said the growing Latino population in the region and student interest prompted the university to focus on Latino studies. The conference and the resulting journal edition are steps toward UA becoming a hub on Latino issues, he said. “Throughout the university, there are resources among the faculty that can help the state with this new population,” Jimenez said.

Passenger traffic at Birmingham Airport increases because of UA
FOX6 (Birmingham) – Feb. 22
Passenger traffic at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport increased more than five percent in January. Over 200,000 passengers traveled through the airport last month. Airport officials say the increase is due to the University of Alabama playing for the national championship in Pasadena. Most of the major airlines serving Birmingham Airport saw an increase in their passenger traffic over January of 2009.
