Opinion: Don’t overlook UA’s research, service mission

…over the years, the university has emerged as one of the finer research institutions in the South and has dozen of programs many are not aware of that reach out to West Alabama, the state and nation as part of its service mission. A good example of the university’s commitment to research and service is the work of Marcus Ashford, a mechanical engineering professor. He has developed a way to reduce emissions produced by internal combustion engines that trap fuel vapors, which are inside every gas tank, and use those gases as a starter fuel for engines…The next time you think about the University of Alabama and its role, think beyond education, and even athletics, and remember it does our state proud as a major research and service institution, too.

UA Researcher Finds Way to Capture and Use Fuel Vapors

We’ve all had a whiff of that excess fuel from car engines, especially when we pump gas. A University of Alabama professor believes that he’s got the answer to keep some of those exhaust fumes out of the air. And it would also put them to use in your car…Since he was in college, Professor Marcus Ashford has been toying with recycling fuel vapor in automobile gas tanks, and using it start engines…
