UA Engineering Professor Selected for GENI Research Team

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. Xiaoyan Hong, an associate professor of computer science at The University of Alabama, has been selected for one of 33 academic and industry teams to be funded by the National Science Foundation to advance research in network science and engineering in an effort known as GENI.

Hong was awarded a project to work on initial exploration of security issues. She will work with a team of researchers including Dr. Yang Xiao, associate professor of computer science at UA, and Dr. Fei Hu, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at UA. Hong directs the Wireless, Mobile and Networking Research Lab at the University.

GENI, the Global Environment for Network Innovations, aims to understand global networks, make innovations in the frontiers of network science and engineering, and transform the science of network research. GENI research is in the early prototype and design stage, but it is expected to lead to capabilities that advance far beyond the Internet of today.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s fully accredited College of Engineering has more than 2,700 students and more than 100 faculty. In the last eight years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater scholars, Hollings scholars and Portz scholars.
