UA students to offer free tax assistance

Students from the University of Alabama’s Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility and Impact Alabama will conduct a free tax clinic through Saturday at Rosedale Court. The free tax preparation services for low- to moderate-income families will be offered from noon-8 p.m. today and Thursday, noon-6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday.
Stadium expansion on track for completion

…An expansion to the South end zone of the stadium, which was started earlier last year, is still on schedule for completion the first week of July, well before the start of the 2010 Crimson Tide football season…Mal Moore, the athletic director, said he could not be more proud of the work done by Brasfield & Gorrie LLC, a Birmingham-based construction company working on the stadium. “This is a very good team we have,” Moore said. “They’re very capable of doing what they say. I think they are doing very well.”…
Sella-Granata features BFA student exhibit

The art department will present Elizabeth Wuestefeld’s senior exhibition, “Little Things,” this week as she completes her bachelor’s of fine arts degree…Rachel Dobson, the visual research curator in the art and art history department, said the exhibit is Wuestefeld’s opportunity to display her work to fulfill her requirement as a BFA student.“All BFA students must have an exhibition to promote their work,” Dobson said. “It’s also good for the department.”…The exhibit opened Tuesday and will remain open until March 5…
Lecture to be held today regarding mental health

The Center for Mental Health and Aging will hold another lecture as part of its Scientific Seminar Series today at noon in the Alabama Institute for Manufacturing Excellence. The speaker will be Dr. Peter Lichtenberg, director of the Institute of Gerontology at Wayne State University. Lichtenberg’s lecture is titled “Where Science and Practice Converge: Living Alone in Older Age and Issues of Capacity,” where he will discuss his “Home Alone” research. “His lecture will focus on factors that predict older persons’ ability to return to their homes and live independently following in-patient rehabilitation,” said Patricia Parmelee, director of the CMHA and a professor of psychology. “In particular, the presentation focuses on cognitive functioning, and factors clinical psychologists need to consider in assessing older people’s cognitive capacity to live alone.”…
UA sponsors event honoring black history

The sound of hip-hop violins, saxophones and drum beats will fill the gymnasium of the Charles A. Brown Elementary School in Ensley today as the University Union takes one of its cultural programs on the road for the first time. The program, titled “Making History Everyday,” will give students at Brown Elementary the opportunity to look at black history through the performing arts… “Our goal is for them to see themselves and utilize performing arts as a tool or mechanism for their choice in higher education,” said LaToya Scott, director of special events and student involvement for the University Union…
