EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

A Foresight meeting for student organizations will be held today at 6 p.m. in 360 Ferguson Student Center. Foresight is an interactive workshop designed to equip and empower student organizations through providing information about the various resources available around campus. Foresight is a prerequisite for Financial Affairs Committee funding. More information: source@bama.ua.edu.

Students can sign up for Relay For Life today from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in 309 Ferguson Student Center Room 309. Relay for Life raises money for cancer research and cancer patients.

Alabama men’s and women’s basketball will play the LSU Tigers in Coleman Coliseum. The men will play on Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. The Memphis Grizzlies will perform a special halftime show. All students get in free with their ACT cards. The women will play on Jan. 31 at 2 p.m.

Alabama men’s tennis will host Arizona at 1 p.m. on Jan. 30 at the Tennis Complex. On Jan. 31 Alabama will host a double-header against Auburn and Duke starting at noon.

Students interested in working in Washington, D.C., can learn more about the Washington Experience with Dr. Michael New on Jan. 27 at 5:30 p.m. in 336 Ferguson Student Center. All majors are welcome. More information: Dr. Michael New at 348-0980.

An informational meeting for students wishing to apply to be a member of the University Stewards will be Feb. 1 at 6:15 p.m. in 203 Student Services Center. University Stewards are committed to helping UA admissions counselors recruit top students from around the nation by creating personal relationships with prospective students and their families. Stewards have the opportunity to travel to off-campus admissions receptions and to serve weekly for on-campus recruitment lunches. They also escort visiting students to classes and meetings. In coordination with African-American Heritage Month, Dr. Bebe Barefoot, an English instructor at UA, will discuss her exploration of lyrics in traditional blues songs performed by 20th century black female singers on Feb. 3 at 12:30 p.m. in 308 Manly Hall. The lecture is the second in a semester-long series of Brown Bag Lectures sponsored by the Women’s Resource Center and women’s studies in the department of gender and race studies. The Susan and Gaylon McCollough Medical Scholars Forum will be held Feb. 5 and 6 at Shelby Hall. High school students, UA faculty and current UA students will discuss the relationship of the humanities and social science to a successful medical practice. The forum will feature Dr. Arnold “Gil” Diethelm, a longtime surgeon and medical pioneer for organ transplantation. All students are invited. Since meals and program materials will be provided, students interested in attending the forum are asked to make reservations by calling the Office of Health Professions Advising at 348-1670 no later than Jan. 29 or by e-mailing the office at premed@ua.edu.

Students can participate with Haiti relief efforts. UA Students who want to make donations to assist the earthquake victims in Haiti can do so in three ways: (1) visit the Haiti relief tables in the Ferguson Student Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Jan. 29; (2) text “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10 through the Clinton Bush Haiti Relief Fund; or (3) text “YELE” to 501501 to donate $5 through the Wyclef Jean foundation. The Capstone Drive entrance to Gorgas Library has reopened.

Beginning Jan. 28, the Student Health Center will open at 8 a.m. on Thursdays.

The Student Recreation Center upper (south) parking lot will now be accessible to all parking permits throughout all monitored periods as part of a pilot program for the spring semester. Residence hall students are encouraged to utilize this opportunity to access the SRC during less-crowded times of the day.

The UA Writing Center is open for the spring semester. Hours of operation are Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.; Friday, 8 a.m.-3 p.m.; and Sunday, 1-6 p.m. Appointments are available; walk-ins are always welcome. Last Lecture nominations are being accepted until Feb. 19. Undergraduate students, graduate students and alumni are invited to nominate the UA faculty member they would most like to hear lecture on the following premise: “If this were your last chance to talk to a group of UA students, what would you say to them?” To submit a nomination, complete the on-line form at http://graduate.ua.edu/events/lastlecture.html. University Recreation and doctoral candidate George M. Brown are conducting a survey to evaluate students’ knowledge, engagement and perceptions of cardiovascular physical activity. To complete the survey, click here.

Creative Campus needs art submissions from student artists of any major for the Alabama Art Display Project. Several buildings on campus will be enhanced with artwork created by UA students. The exhibition of artwork will begin on the UA campus in the spring semester. If student artists are interested in selling their work, they should include a sale price as well as their contact information. Each work must be submitted to Maxwell Hall with an “Alabama Art Display Waiver” that can be found on the Creative Campus Web site at http://creativecampus.ua.edu. More information: Amanda Barnes.

Undergraduate students of all majors are invited to enter UA’s annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference scheduled for April 15 at the Bryant Conference Center. The event gives students an opportunity to compete for cash prizes and earn practical experience in defending or performing their work before judges. To participate, undergraduate students must register their projects by submitting an application form and abstract describing their projects by March 8. ESPN internships are available for UA students. The deadline to apply is Feb. 15. Those interested in applying must be currently enrolled students in good academic standing who plan on graduating in December 2010 or May 2011. H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccines are available. The Student Health Center is offering the H1N1 flu vaccine injection at the clinic during normal hours of operation by either walk-in or appointment (348-2778) at no cost to University students. The Student Health Center also has a limited quantity of seasonal flu shots available for a nominal fee. Most health insurances do pay for the flu shot, but check with your insurer.

If you have flu-like symptoms or think you may have been exposed to swine flu, visit the Student Health Center (no appointment necessary).
