H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccines are available. The Student Health Center is offering the H1N1 flu vaccine injection at the clinic during normal hours of operation by either walk-in or appointment (348-2778) at no cost to University students. The Student Health Center also has a limited quantity of seasonal flu shots available for a nominal fee. Most health insurances do pay for the flu shot, but check with your insurer.

If you have flu-like symptoms or think you may have been exposed to swine flu, visit the Student Health Center (no appointment necessary). Like other flu viruses, H1N1 spreads from person to person through coughing, sneezing and sometimes through touching objects contaminated with the virus.
The Student Health Center provides the following reminders on basic prevention measures for any virus:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners also are effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
  • Clean and sterilize contaminated surfaces.

For more information on swine flu, visit http://www.prepare.ua.edu. To read more about the H1N1 (swine) flu vaccine, visit http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/vis/downloads/vis-laiv-h1n1.pdf.

For more information call the Student Health Center Flu Hotline at 348-9184.
