UA offers Early College

The University of Alabama is giving high school students a head start on their college education. A new program called “UA Early College” will allow students to earn early college credits online while they are still in high school. Right now 260 students from across the state are enrolled…

UA is completing seat belt study
WSFA (Montgomery) – Jan. 21
The University of Alabama is in charge of the seat belt study. They’ll present their findings to the Governor at the end of this summer.

University Haiti Relief Projects Taking Shape

…The UA Community Service Center, along with 14 student organizations and three university departments, started the UA Students for Haiti Relief group, focused on collecting monetary donations to help with the nation’s immediate need. “The most effective way students can help with the volunteer effort for Haiti is to check the Facebook group – UA Students for Haiti Relief – for updates on events and other volunteer projects,” Joshua Burford, CSC coordinator of freshmen community outreach, said. The CSC, along with the SGA, will be hosting an event at the Ferguson Forum entitled “Haiti for Beginners” Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. to raise awareness about the country…The department of theatre and dance is presenting a benefit concert entitled “Here Comes the Sun” to raise money for Haiti disaster relief as well. The concert, scheduled for Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Morgan Auditorium, will feature musical and dance performances from students in the department…

Students organize health program
Tuscaloosa News – Jan. 22
Students at Collins-Riverside Middle School are organizing a program to improve the health of residents in Northport and the surrounding communities. The school received a grant from the University of Alabama to start the Community Health Applications through Mentoring Program. The program will allow Collins-Riverside students to provide workshops and health fairs in Northport and Tuscaloosa County that will educate people about the health issues that affect them most…

UA entrepreneurship institute helps people start new business

…The University of Alabama started its Entrepreneurship Institute three years ago. They primarily target rural areas, giving potential business owners advice on how to get started.

8 engineers to be inducted into hall of fame

The Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame will induct eight people and honor one project during a ceremony at the Grand Hotel Resort and Spa in Point Clear on Feb. 20. These eight inductees will join the 130 people who have already been inducted to the Hall of Fame. Richard W. Amos, Linda A. Figg, Ronald W. Gray, Philip E. LaMoreaux Sr., Robert M. Lightfoot Jr., George A. Little, William R. McNair and Susan N. Story will be inducted, and TTL Inc. will be honored as well that evening…

Biology department offers free study abroad opportunity

The UA biology department is offering a new course in the Bahamas this summer on stress in the marine environment. Eight UA students will be selected for this expenses-paid trip with an additional eight students from the University of Mississippi participating as well. The selected students will receive four credit hours for the summer course…“This opportunity is being funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to give students from Alabama and Mississippi an opportunity to study coral reef environments and the various stressors that are affecting the marine environment,” Olson said… 

‘Not My Son’ documentary shown Saturday

The Center for Public Television and Radio is hosting a showing on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Woodland Park Church in Birmingham…“Gun violence is a leading cause of death in African American males between the ages of 10 to 24,” said Dwight Cammeron, producer/director of “Not My Son” and documentary television program director for the Center for Public Television…
