…No doubt, big employers such as UA, local government and Mercedes-Benz help stabilize the economy and enrich the culture, but too often we overlook the smaller businesses that make up most of the economic activity. More people work at businesses that employ fewer than 250 people than at larger employers. The most recent data available, from 2007, show 29 industries in Tuscaloosa County with more than 250 employees but 4,191 with fewer than 250 workers, according to the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Alabama…
