The Alabama Productivity Center at the University of Alabama and the Alabama Technology Network today announced 9 organizations as recipients of the 2009 Alabama Quality Award, honoring performance excellence…The Alabama Quality Award is administered by the Alabama Productivity Center, an Alabama Technology Network center and a nonprofit organization established in 1986 by The University of Alabama and Alabama Power Co. Marr’s Field Journal wins national award

The Marr’s Field Journal, the UA undergraduate literary and arts magazine, won a Pacemaker Award for its excellence in design, content and overall concept…The publication was one of six national finalists for the Pacemaker, given out by the National Associated Collegiate Press. The award was presented Saturday at the 2009 National College Media Convention in Austin, Texas. “The Pacemaker Awards are essentially the top award for any student medium in the country,” said Paul Wright, director of the Office of Student Media. “They recognize the top publications including newspapers, magazines, art journals and Web sites and are essentially the top award or Pulitzer of student media.”…
Homegrown artist to hold exhibit in Moody Art Gallery

Tuscaloosa’s own homegrown artist, William Christenberry, will be holding an exhibit of his art called “Land/Memory” Thursday at the Sarah Moody Gallery at 6 pm. The exhibit will run from Thursday until Dec. 22. Christenberry is an artist who graduated from the UA fine arts program in 1958. He has won several awards, including the Art Matters Grant in 1994 and an individual arts fellowship in 1976. He has spent much of his time showing exhibits around the country in cities such as New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington D.C. and San Francisco…Vicki Rial, the UA gallery exhibitions coordinator, said Christenberry is a true cultural icon and world-class artist. “He focuses on where he came from, whether by choice or happen chance,” she explained. “His subject matter is about land and memory, where the memory is more idealistic, but the elements stay the same.”…William Dooley, director of the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art, described Christenberry’s work in the news release for the exhibit as a “spirit of drawing [that] reflects an active mind that is reaching back and recalling an Alabama past.”…

The Alabama Forensic Council will compete against a team from the University of Mississippi tonight to debate a specific aspect of athletics in the Southeastern Conference. The debate will be held at 6 p.m. in Room 125 of ten Hoor Hall. Each team has designed two resolutions each to debate, pooling them together for tonight’s discussion. The topics discussed may include complications in the BCS playoff system, athletics as they relate to education and branding campaigns…
UA show highlights hair care

Hair will take center stage at the University of Alabama tonight as stylists and models showcase their designs in the “My Hair My Expression” fashion show…LaToya Scott, the coordinator for student programs at UA, said the show is the result of students’ suggestions dating back almost two years ago…Scott designed the show as a way for students to connect with local stylists. ‘Theology on Tap’ puts religious discussion in relaxed atmosphere
