Bus crash report released
Huntsville Times – Nov. 20
…the crash raised questions about whether seat belts on the bus could have saved lives or prevented injuries. A pilot program was created that put seat belts in 12 school buses throughout the state, including buses in Madison and Decatur. That study is in its third and final year and will reveal how often students wear the belts.….Dan Turner, a professor at the University of Alabama who is conducting the pilot program, said seat belt participation in the 12-bus study has varied with age. Elementary school students have worn the belts more often. Participation among middle and high school students has been “embarrassingly poor,” he said…

Recycling with a button’s push

…As part of a senior-level mechanical engineering project, engineering students formed teams to design devices that with the push of a button could successfully sort plastic and glass bottles, aluminum and steel cans and unclassified waste. “Each year, the seniors do some sort of design competition. This year they’re doing something with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers,” said Beth Todd, associate professor of mechanical engineering and undergraduate program coordinator…

UA Astronomers Invite Community to View Star Clusters

University of Alabama astronomers invite the community to view star clusters and nebulae in the next Public Night sky-viewing session Friday, Nov. 20 from 7 until 10 p.m. at the Moundville Archaeological Park. Hosted by Drs. Bill Keel and Ron Buta, professors in UA’s department of physics and astronomy, the free viewing will enable the public to use 17- and 20-inch telescopes on pads in a field across the road from the Moundville park’s museum. All sky viewings are contingent upon the weather… 

UA Arboretum ready for ‘come and get it’ compost sale

The University of Alabama Arboretum is hosting a “Come and Get It” compost day Saturday, selling compost made from consumer waste and leaves culled from campus… “Come and Get It” compost day is a way to promote and extend UA’s sustainability efforts, Modica said “What we’re really trying to accomplish are two things: We want to pay for the fuel costs for turning it into compost, and we want to be able to take that money and put it back into the project in some way,” she said… 

University Chorus receives standing ovation

The University Chorus performed on Thursday night at 7:30 in the Concert Hall of the Moody Music Building…The concert also included “Mass of the Children,” composed by John Rutter, which included a children’s choir along with an adult mixed choir, two soloists and an orchestra. The Hillcrest Middle School Women’s Ensemble, directed by Khristina Motley, accompanied the University Choir for the Rutter composition… 

UA kicks off Toys for Tots drive

…The Library Support Staff Association kicked off its seventh annual Toys for Tots drive Monday. Students and faculty, along with members of the community, are invited to donate new, unwrapped toys in drop-off boxes across campus. Students can find donation boxes in the Hoole, McClure, Bruno and Rodgers libraries. Donations also can be made on the first and second floors of Gorgas Library…

…The University and Auburn University have teamed up to provide students with relevant political information to help them make their choice in the upcoming election. This information will be offered on the Web site collegiatevoters.com, which the SGAs at Auburn and the University created in a joint project. The official launch of the Web site was Wednesday…Collegiatevoters.com will feature detailed candidate biographies, columns from state newspapers, a countdown to Election Day and a link for voter registration, according to the news release…
