Earning the early degree
Tuscaloosa News – Nov. 21
…No school in the Football Bowl Subdivision has more active players with degrees than UA: Rogers is one of 13, a number that is a source of pride for UA Director of Academic Services John Dever, among many others … Even among a baker’s dozen players who found a way to fit themselves for a mortarboard before having to hang up their helmets, McElroy stands out academically. The Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback is only a junior, but already he’s in graduate school with a degree in business marketing … As for the rest of the plan, McElroy will exit graduate school in December 2010, coinciding with the expiration of his athletic eligibility … McElroy has won an award as the outstanding marketing student in the UA business school. He’s been approached by a UA faculty member about applying to be a Rhodes Scholar, and nearly navigated his entire undergraduate career with straight A’s … With the academic support system in place at UA, Dever foresees a high number of early graduates as something the football program will be able to achieve consistently going forward … “We’ll have nine more that can graduate in December. Holiday travel may see bump over 2008
Birmingham News – Nov. 22
…A University of Alabama study has found that days preceding and following holidays are a higher risk for highway crashes involving death and injuries. A study by UA’s Center for Advanced Public Safety found that Thanksgiving Day 2008 was the 13th lowest day of the year for serious crashes. On average, Fridays have 25 percent more serious crashes than other days of the week. “There are definitely times to be avoided, especially if bad weather is a possibility,” said Allen Parrish, center director. “The basic problem is not just the volume of vehicles, it is also the mix of drivers,” Parrish said. “The situation obviously gets more dangerous when there is a large concentration of people on the road who are not nearly as familiar with their routes as commuters.”…

AT LARGE: The fall color display reflects ‘unusual diversity of Alabama’
Tuscaloosa News – Nov. 22
…Mary Jo Modica, the horticulturist at the University of Alabama’s Arboretum and fellow Tuscaloosa News columnist, told me last week that a lot of rain isn’t necessarily conducive to fall color, especially the color red. “It has something to do with the way the pigment interacts with the sugars in the leaf which produce the brightest reds,” she said. “And if you have a lot of rain the sugars get washed out of the leaves before it has a chance to ‘express.’ “Here at the arboretum, the most common colors have had have been yellow and orange, although we may see more reds as the season progresses.”…
