TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Sarah Gieger of Birmingham (zip code 35213) was named The University of Alabama Homecoming Queen for 2009 on Friday, Oct. 16 during UA’s annual Homecoming Pep Rally on campus.

She is a senior majoring in accounting.
The following students, all seniors, were chosen to be members of the 2009 UA Homecoming Court:
Morgan Dennis, a psychology major from Westhampton, N.J.
Brandi Freeman, a metallurgical engineering major from Tuscaloosa
Meg Greer, a dance major from LaGrange, Ga.
Hayley Ray McNeill, a musical theater and business law major from Houston, Texas
UA students selected the queen in a general election held Tuesday, Oct. 13. Some 8,566 votes were cast in this year’s election; voting was done online through student myBama accounts. The queen is crowned at halftime of the homecoming football game between Alabama and South Carolina on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
The Homecoming Service Project this year was comprised of one major event and four successive volunteer opportunities. Together, the events supported the RISE Program and Temporary Emergency Services. The RISE Program benefits children with disabilities from birth to kindergarten and is located on the UA campus. Temporary Emergency Services is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping individuals and families of Tuscaloosa County in crisis situations.
