Prisoners get fine arts lessons

For 12 weeks, Alex Chambers, a Master of Fine Arts student at the University of Alabama, taught poetry in an unusual setting: the Bibb County Correctional Facility…As part of the Alabama Prison Arts and Education Program, Chambers is one of several UA graduate students and professors traveling to prisons throughout the state to teach creative writing and art courses during a semester… 

Brookwood High School students learn fundamentals of floral design

…The class isn’t just offered to Brookwood students, though. Eleven students from West End High School in Walnut Grove are also learning about floral design from Crutchfield. Through an Internet videoconferencing lab, Crutchfield uses the University of Alabama’s Access Distance Learning Web site to teach in real time and send video feeds to West End High while she’s at Brookwood, about 120 miles away…

Flag display at University will honor heroes in military

The University of Alabama’s Quad will be decorated with 150 U.S. flags beginning Monday as part of the American Heroes Memorial fundraiser. The flags, which will be on display through Sept. 11, will honor U.S. forces deployed overseas and those who lost their lives fighting in war zones since 2001. The American Heroes Memorial fundraiser is organized by Capstone Conservatives, a student organization that promotes and organizes debates about political issues and encourages participation among students and the community…

In honor of Constitution Day, the University of Alabama will host a panel discussion Sept. 17 examining the constitutionality of national health care reform plans and the federal economic bailout. The event will be from 3 to 4 p.m. in Lloyd Hall, Room 126, on the UA campus. Sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, the event will feature Joseph Smith, associate professor of political science at UA; Bryan Fair, the Thomas E. Skinner Professor of Law at UA’s School of Law; and other panelists. David Lanoue, chairman of UA’s department of political science, will serve as the panel’s moderator.
