Administrators check campus pulse through lunch

Sometimes the best conversations happen during lunch. At least that’s what University Provost Judy Bonner and Vice Provost Mark Nelson think. In this light, Bonner and Nelson are inviting students, faculty and staff to join them for food and discussion at this year’s first “Pulse Check Lunch,” which will go on Thursday at noon in Room 204-A at the Ferguson Center…Despite their busy schedules, Nelson said it was a priority for both he and Bonner to carve out a couple of times out of the year to be able to meet with students. “The students are the reason that we are here,” Nelson said. “Our calendars are very tight, but we felt it a priority to carve out time throughout the semester so that no one appointment was necessary.”…

Coyne to talk evolution at UA

Jerry Coyne, a professor in the department of ecology and evolution at the University of Chicago, will be on campus tonight to discuss the theory of evolution. This is the beginning of the upcoming Alabama’s Lectures on Life’s Evolution series…

…Kim Bissell, Southern Progress Corp. Endowed Professor in Magazine Journalism in the University of Alabama College of Communication and Information Sciences, has been selected for the 2009 Krieghbaum Under-40 Award. The award is given by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication for outstanding early career accomplishments and to honor individuals who have shown outstanding achievement and effort in teaching, research and public service. Bissell serves as the sequence coordinator for undergraduate students in visual journalism. She has received the College’s Board of Visitors Teaching Excellence Award and the Kappa Tau Alpha Commitment to Teaching Award. She has also won several awards for research from AEJMC…
