UA students participate in Day of Peace

…In the hopes of introducing the local community to the Peace One Day effort, Barbara Schlichtman, who teaches a conflict resolution course at the University of Alabama’s New College, helped organize the educational event with Apwonjo, a student club that aims to raise awareness about issues in sub-Saharan Africa. The group has scheduled a screening of the film “The Day of Peace” at Lloyd Hall auditorium tonight, and students will have an information table on campus to distribute informational guides and origami peace cranes…
Home foreclosures hit locally and are continuing to rise

The nation’s home foreclosure crisis has infected Tuscaloosa County and appears to be getting worse, according to a University of Alabama sociologist who has studied the issue for almost two years. Bronwen Lichtenstein, an associate professor in UA’s criminal justice department, said data she has collected on local home foreclosures shows a continuing rise in foreclosures since she started her research in February 2008…While homeowners in the higher-end neighborhoods have been spared, she said, there have been many foreclosures in Holt, Alberta and outlying parts of the county. Some middle-class subdivisions like Million Dollar Lakes in Lake View have seen more foreclosures than one might expect, Lichtenstein said. “What was surprising was it was very modestly priced houses that were being foreclosed,” she said…
Ex-UA president says health-care issue requires collaboration

The health-care industry must work together with other industries for health-care reform to work, David Mathews, president and CEO of the Kettering Foundation, said at the 10th annual Rural Health Conference on Friday…Mathews was president of the University of Alabama from 1969-1980, and during that tenure served under President Gerald Ford as U.S. Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare from 1975-1977…The conference was sponsored by the University of Alabama’s Rural Health Institute, part of the College of Community Health Sciences. This year’s two-day program, held at the Bryant Conference Center, focused on prevention in health care.
Used cars scarce in Montgomery
