Alabama football notebook: Scholarship to honor late linebacker Victor Ellis

The UA System Board of Trustees will hear a resolution Friday for the establishment of the Victor Ellis Endowed Scholarship Fund in honor of the late Crimson Tide linebacker. Through his last will and testament, Ellis contributed $33,589.99 to “provide scholarships for worthy, non-athlete students at the University of Alabama.” Ellis died of cancer on March 25, 2008. He was 28. The money was the remaining balance of the fund established by friend and former teammate Ahmaad Galloway through Bryant Bank in Birmingham to help raise money for Ellis’ medical care. In addition, friends and family have contributed $14,731.73 to UA in his memory. Per conditions of the scholarship recommended by school president Robert Witt, “Priority of consideration shall be given to students enrolled at UA who are not participating in intercollegiate athletics.”…After graduating in 2002 with a communications degree, Ellis later worked as a regional recruiter in Charlotte, N.C., for UA’s admissions office…

The UA School of Law’s moot courtroom was filled with various professors and students Monday afternoon waiting to hear Deak Nabers, assistant professor of English at Brown University, deliver a lecture titled “Ordered Liberty: World War II and the Concept of Law in the United States.” The lecture, co-sponsored by the School of Law and the College of Arts & Sciences, was part of the Hugo Black lecture series, named after Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black, a graduate of UA’s law school…
Alternative Break offers alternative volunteer options

Students searching for both domestic and international volunteer opportunities in Tuscaloosa have more options this year as the UA’s Alternative Break program expands, said Josh Burford, coordinator of freshman community outreach…The program originally only offered two service trips a year, Burford said. It now offers six trips a year — one during each of the fall, winter, May interim break and another during the short, Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend. Both an international and a domestic service trip will be offered to students for the 2010 Alternative Spring Break trip, Burford said…
United Way begins 2009 fundraising

The event will be at the Bryant Conference Center from noon to 2 p.m. today. During the short program, Butler said they will be serving barbecue and showing the new Live United video. Amy Eiffler, communications chairwoman for United Way, put the video together with four other people. Eifler said the University has provided the United Way campaign video free of charge for the past eight years. David Lammon was the student production assistant for the video. “He was a primary producer for the video,” Eifler said. “He did the majority of the work. “Everyone needs to come out on Wednesday,” Eifler said. “It’s for a great cause.”…The University will have its own United Way kick-off on Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. in the Moody Music building. Officials also will hold a victory celebration for the 2009 campus campaign in December.

It is also parents weekend at the University of Alabama where the couple are faculty advisors for Hillel, the Jewish student group. Because the two coincide, the Rothmans will help host a large celebratory dinner at the Ferguson Center, including members of Temple Emanu-El, college students and parents from all over the country. Rothman expects around 150 people…
