UA SUPe Store Pilots Textbook Rental Program

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Supply Store is piloting a new textbook rental program this fall, beginning with three courses.

The program is available for the fall 2009 semester for CSM 204 (Introduction to Personal Financial Planning), ARH 252 (Survey of Art I) and ARH 253 (Survey of Art II). The cost of book rental for these courses is 45 percent of the price of purchasing a new textbook.

The textbook rental program is the latest in a number of programs the University has implemented to cut textbook costs for students. Over the last several years, the SUPe Store has added more economical textbook options, including binder-ready textbooks, digital books and paperback books. In addition, the University has made it feasible for faculty to place textbook materials on reserve in the library.

“The goal of this program is to offer another option to reduce costs for course materials and assist students with stretching their educational dollars,” said Bernadette Chavira Trull, SUPe Store associate director for books. “With continued support from the UA community, we will be able to expand the textbook rental program.”

The program was established with the interest and support of both the UA Student Government Association and the University’s textbook committee, and fits within the guidelines of the Higher Education Opportunity Act, passed in August 2008.

Students must pay the textbook rental fee when they check out their books. All books must be returned by the specified return day.
