ANNOUNCEMENTS
Section of Campus Drive to be repaved on Friday, Aug. 28. The section of Campus Drive from the intersection of Marr’s Spring Road and Campus Drive will be repaved on Aug. 28. Traffic will not be stopped; however, only one lane will be open at any given time, so you may want to take an alternative route. The project will start Friday morning and be completed by Friday afternoon.
Grounds use permit required for outdoor events on campus. Students, student organizations, faculty members, staff members, departments or external entities are required to submit a Grounds Use Permit in order to reserve space and acquire approval for an event on campus. A 10-day notice is normally required in order to properly coordinate any event and gain the necessary approval. The Grounds Permit Request form can be found on the Grounds Coordination Web site at www.uafacilities.ua.edu/grounds/pages/grounds-use-permit.htm. Changes for football season. We are counting down to kickoff for the 2009 football season! To keep game days at UA smooth, safe and fun, we have made some changes in the way we handle student tickets, stadium entry and parking. Students should look for information titled “Get in the Game” through UA Student News e-mails and The Crimson White student newspaper or at Week of Welcome locations, residence halls, the athletic ticket office and the Action Card office. New emergency notification system: UA Alerts. To keep you better informed if severe weather or an emergency occurs on campus, the University has installed UA Alerts, a technology tool that sends voice calls and text messages to your cell phone and e-mails to your myBama account. In an emergency, an e-mail will be sent to your myBama account. Please make sure that your contact information on myBama is updated. If you do not check your myBama e-mail account, then you need to turn on e-mail forwarding. You can find directions for doing this under the Student tab on myBama. EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT
Student Involvement Week continues Aug. 25–29. Several gatherings designed to orient students and encourage student involvement will be held, including Get On Board Day on Aug. 26. Get involved; get creative on Aug. 25 in Maxwell Hall. Join us for a night full of student-created art, including displays of visual art, performing art and create-your-own art. The United Greek Council Convocation will be Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. in 360 Ferguson Center. The UGC is home to UA’s three multicultural Greek organizations: Delta Xi Phi, Sigma Lambda Beta and Sigma Lambda Gamma. These organizations strive to unite the campus through academics, diversity, service, and brotherhood and sisterhood. The convocation is an open information session that will provide students with an opportunity to learn more about multicultural Greek life. More information: Juan Silvas.
The IFC and Panhellenic Councils along with Costa Del Mar will host the second annual U. of Blue Greekfest Aug. 28 on Fraternity Row. The show will feature four different performances. Hip-hop and R&B cover group Azz-Izz will open the show, followed by rock/progressive bluegrass crossover artist Keller Williams. The third act of the night will be country/folk legend Robert Earl Keen. The headline of the event will be a two-hour set by jam-band legend moe. Fraternity and sorority members can buy tickets though their organizations. All other students will be able to purchase general admission tickets through the Crimson Arts ticket office at http://crimsonartstickets.universitytickets.com/user_pages/event.asp?id=405&cid=61. All of the proceeds raised through ticket sales of U. of Blue Greekfest will go to support The Billfish Foundation, a program that works to return billfish populations worldwide to a healthy level of abundance, and Magic Moments, a non-profit organization that grants non-medical wishes for seriously ill children in Alabama. Gates open on Jefferson Avenue at 6 p.m. The show starts at 6:15 p.m.
Taking Back Sunday will perform on Sept. 18 for the fall concert presented by the Division of Student Affairs and the University Union. The concert begins at 8 p.m. at Coleman Coliseum. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale exclusively at http://crimsonartstickets.com. Student tickets are $15. Floor seats and general admission tickets are $30. Free parking for the concert will be available at the UA Soccer Complex with shuttles provided by Crimson Ride. More information: Maeci Martin at 348-7487.

Campuswide network registration for laptops and mobile devices. Each fall, all laptops and mobile devices registered on the UA system are removed in order to maintain a high level of safety and security across the campus network. This effort removes students, faculty and staff no longer affiliated with the University from the system. If you are a student, faculty member or staff member returning to campus and wish to use a laptop or mobile device, you must complete a simple, one-time registration. You will be prompted to complete this one-time registration on your first attempt to open a Web browser. Enter your myBama username and password, accept the user agreement and restart your device to complete the registration process. For ResNet users only, you will be prompted to register your desktop as well as your laptop and mobile device. In response to complaints about the old clickers from students and instructors, the University has implemented a new type of student response system (clicker) from Turning Technologies. The eInstruction CPS clickers will no longer work in UA classrooms. Students who are required to use a clicker for classes beginning this fall must buy a new clicker, called the TurningPoint ResponseCard XR, which is available from the University Supply Store or other bookstores. ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
The deadline to submit applications for the Southeastern Conference Academic Consortium (SECAC) Global Leadership Scholarship is Aug. 27. The $8,500 scholarship provides students the opportunity to enjoy the culture of Northern Ireland while attending Queen’s University in Belfast and participating in a service-learning project during the 2010 spring semester. The remaining cost of the program will be $9,375, to be paid by the participating student. To apply for the scholarship, a student must be a sophomore, junior or senior in good standing, hold a 3.0 GPA (or higher), and be interested in a service-learning project.
