UA offers online help for ‘tweens’

This year, the University of Alabama’s Department of Media Relations has put together a back-to-school multimedia Web site intended to help parents with the issues facing tweens. “Read Tween the Lines” is designed to promote UA faculty to the general public and includes interviews and videos with faculty members who share their knowledge of the tween demographic…Suzanne Dowling, a communications specialist with media relations, said the discussion among instructors in the College of Education kept coming back to tweens, starting out as a talk about the stress of the first day of kindergarten. But, she said, one professor said the first day of middle school was just as stressful. “We thought of the first day of kindergarten,” Dowling said. “But we wanted to give it a new twist.” The information on the site goes beyond the stress of the first day of school, about which Joyce Stallworth, senior associate dean in the College of Education, said parents should discuss with their tweens…how to teach tweens to be frugal and knowledgeable about their effect on the economy. “They are eager to learn about what they can do with their money,” said Jan Brakefield, assistant professor of consumer sciences. “Tweens soak up this information, whereas teens have already become subject to instant gratification.”…

…new numbers from the Labor Department show the home of the University of Alabama saw the biggest monthly increase in unemployment from May to June nationwide…(UA business professor) Jim Cashman: “Manufacturing is one that’s being hit as this recession goes on because they simply can’t afford to keep all of their equipment running and people occupied if they have don’t have the sales to support it, as we’re seeing here in Tuscaloosa.”

The Alabama football team’s annual fan day schedule has been set. The event will be held Sunday, Aug. 9 at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The team will hold an open practice for two hours beginning at 2:30 p.m. with an autograph session for coach Nick Saban, players and assistant coaches to follow. Fans can enter the stadium via the northeast gates starting an hour before practice… –UA adding student seating for hoops: University of Alabama students will have a few more seats for basketball games next season. The renovated Coleman Coliseum will include a new scoreboard with video screens, and a new practice facility is also in the works. Other changes reported Thursday by the Mobile Press-Register include 120 front-row seats behind the basket in addition to their regular spot on the opposite side…
