Students mentor Holt high schoolers

…The PASS-Tuscaloosa Academic Enrichment Program is a partnership between three University departments, the Tuscaloosa County Board of Education and Tuscaloosa’s One Place, to offer incoming freshman and rising sophomores at Holt High School academic and cultural programming this summer…Lisa Scherff, associate professor of English education, said this is the third year PASS-TAEP has been offered to students. Scherff said having PASS-TAEP in the summer is a nice chance for enrichment beyond what students may normally have access to, and unlike typical summer school, students voluntarily participate in the program after being recommended by teachers…

Camp Cash at UA
WVUA (Tuscaloosa) – June 17
…the University of Alabama is teaching some younger students how to be responsible with their money. It’s called Camp Cash. Middle School students are learning everything from bankruptcy to investing. Director Jan Brakefield says they have received a lot of interest from parents after last year’s camp. Brakefield also says it’s a fun way for kids to learn about the economy and financial planning. “The first part of every afternoon we try to teach a lesson in the classroom format and then we apply that lesson with computer games or other ways we engage them with interesting high level application of what they have learned in the classroom,” Brakefield says. This is the second year for Camp Cash. It’s from one to five in the afternoon for two weeks.

Alabama adapts to poor conditions to win UA Invitational

UA students Jeremy Christian and Foster Bradley…winning the University of Alabama’s Invitational Bass Fishing tournament…Thirteen teams from eight different schools came out for the two-day event…

University receives design award

For its design of Shelby Hall and the surrounding area, the University Campus Master Plan received the 2009 Merit Award from the Society for College and University Planning for excellence in planning for a district or campus component. The honor recognizes work done by the University with HOK San Francisco, a design firm, to plan the campus’s new science and engineering complex, which includes Shelby Hall and about 900,000 square feet of interdisciplinary science and engineering classrooms, auditoriums, laboratories and support facilities. The Alabama Chapter of the American Planning Association also recognized the Campus Master Plan and Design Guide for 2009 this past spring with the Franklin M. Setzer Outstanding Urban Design Award. The award is given to the project which best integrates design into the planning and overall environment, according to a news release.

Math lab software wins top award

Software developed for the University’s Math Technology Learning Center took one of the top awards in an international competition in May.  The lab received the award for its MyMathLab software from the IMS Global Learning Consortium, a non-profit organization, which focuses on the use of learning technology. Prior to receiving the award, the Math lab showcased MyMathLab in Barcelona, Spain…

SummerTide Theatre presents ‘Godspell’

This month in Gulf Shores, the beach is not the only force with an undertow, as students will also be reeled into excitement with SummerTide Theatre’s performance of “Godspell” at the George C. Meyer Theatre Arts Center. SummerTide Theatre, the University’s professional summer theater, will perform “Godspell” from June 5 to July 3 at 8 p.m., Tuesdays through Sundays…
