Camp Cash works to teach financial responsibility
Tuscaloosa News – June 17
Most adults think about those things, especially during an economic crisis when money is tight. But the University of Alabama’s Camp Cash is trying to get middle school-aged children to think about them too.  The day camp, which is running June 15-26, teaches about everything from budgets and savings to mutual funds and bonds. Sponsored by the UA College of Human and Environmental Sciences, Camp Cash strives to institute a good financial mind set in children at an age when they can soak it up the best, according to camp director Jan Brakefield. “At this point they are sponges and eager to learn,” Brakefield said, “But they are not at this point huge users yet. They don’t drive or date, so it is easier to learn to meet and set goals. According to research, young people ages 11-15 are more likely to incorporate their decision-making skills in their lives.” The 13 students attending the second annual Camp Cash will learn a different financial skill each day during the 1-5 p.m. camp. They will start with basics, according to Brakefield, a certified financial planner and UA assistant professor of consumer sciences, then progress into sophisticated skills.
