Bird makes itself at home in UA parking lot

A bird has found some friends at the University of Alabama as staff at one college have taken steps to protect its nest until the eggs hatch later this month A killdeer, a common wading bird, nested in the gravel of a parking lot outside the College of Community Health Sciences, laying four eggs likely over the weekend. On Monday, college employees saw the eggs, and, rather than move the eggs, grounds keepers put up stakes and yellow caution tape around the area to ensure the nest isn’t stepped on, said Tom Struthwolf, a spokesman for the college.“The bird has made a home, and we didn’t want to disturb it,” he said. “We’re about primary care.”

…SGA president Cason Kirby…said the SGA accomplishments this year were made to ultimately benefit UA students, both present and future…a 24-hour library system…Another success of the Kirby administration was the reformation of the emergency student loan system, which allows students to take out loans from the SGA… Kirby’s platform last year also included a plan for the implementation of a textbook rental system, which will allow students to rent textbooks for a fraction of their purchase cost from the University Supply Store…

Program saves taxpayers $4.8 million

In its third year, Impact Alabama’s SaveFirst program helped Alabama families receive $4.8 million in tax refunds, twice the amount recovered last year. ‘We were very pleased with the results of this season and the growth from last year,’ SaveFirst director Sarah Louise Smith said…The program has grown from covering Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, to serving 14 sites around the state, employing 400 college students from 13 Alabama campuses, including 100 from the University of Alabama…Many of the students in the program are enrolled in UA’s Perceptions and Poverty in America class, and come away with different ideas about the working poor, she said…Stephen Black, director of the UA Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility and the instructor for the UA class, is excited about the work that SaveFirst has done, and is also working with students to change the way taxes are professionally prepared in Alabama…
UA business students place in case competition

A team of University of Alabama MBA students recently won third place in the George Washington University International MBA Case Competition in Washington, D.C. The competition had teams from 20 business schools analyze the U.S. Green building Council, which promotes environmentally friendly and energy-saving construction….A team from Concordia University in Montreal won first place, and a team from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, won second place.
Take Back the Night’ calls for end to sexual assault

Tuesday night the UA Women’s Resource Center hosted “Take Back the Night” in honor of the national campaign to end sexual assault and abuse toward women…Along with the WRC there were many co-sponsors at the event including Verizon Wireless, Pepsi, Alabama Panhellenic Association, Turning Points, the Counseling Center, Unscripted, Alpha Chi Omega, the Department for Women’s Studies and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity…
