UA students earn academic honor

Two local students at the University of Alabama were selected by USA Today for its All-USA Academic Team, published today. In all, five UA students are on the academic team, which is divided into a first, second and third team, along with honorable mentions. Adam Knight, a senior biology major from Tuscaloosa, was named to the second team for his research on Parkinson’s disease. Laura Godorecci, a senior from Northport majoring in interdisciplinary studies and classics, was named to the third team for work on film documentaries, particularly of the slow-food movement.  Joining Knight on the second team is Laura Dover, a junior from Jasper majoring in philosophy and Spanish, and Ynhi Thai, a junior from Long Beach, Miss., majoring in chemical and biological engineering Alexander Flachsbart, a senior economics and political science major from Concord, Calif., received an honorable mention. Despite not having a student selected for the first team, which gets $2,500 and the lion’s share of ink in today’s edition of the national newspaper, UA had the highest number of team members of any university entering the competition.

UA student to play in Paralympic World Cup

Jared Arambula, a freshman at the University of Alabama from Valparaiso, Ind., has been named to the USA 23-and-under National Wheelchair Basketball Team.Arambula’s selection was the culmination of a three-day tryout camp at Birmingham’s Lakeshore Foundation and included 25 of the best players in the United States. The team will compete at the Paralympic World Cup, May 19-23, in Manchester, England. The team will also travel to Paris this summer to compete in the Junior World Championships, July 7-9. The freshman kinesiology major was also selected first-team All-American earlier in the month at the collegiate championships in Whitewater, Wis…

Katsinas, director of the Education Policy Center at the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. “You have all the regulation with none of the funding. If you think they’ll have one less hoop to jump through, they’ll have every bit of the regulation they had before.” Maricopa, however, is not in the difficult position in which many rural community college districts find themselves. Katsinas said only a large district like Maricopa could possibly attempt to make up for state aid with contracts from business and industry.“To [Maricopa’s] credit, they have the entrepreneurship to try this,” he said. “There aren’t a lot of community college districts in the country that can consider what they’re doing. It’s a sad state of community college funding in this country that so many states are not fully funding their formulas anymore.”

Crowds of students continued to file into the Bama Theatre well past the 7 p.m. start time Tuesday, clamoring to find seat at the third annual Documenting Justice screening.
The seats were filled with students and community members eager to watch to the six short documentaries produced by University students in the Documenting Justice class…Stephen Black, director of the Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility, started the evening’s events with a brief introduction in which he welcomed audience members and praised the efforts of the 12 student filmmakers…

UA Career Center hosts last fair of the year
