…his message delivered during an economic recession, state budget cuts and rocky times for higher education, was clear and concise: Enrollment is going up, and jobs are safe. ‘The University of Alabama has successfully confronted the challenges ahead,’ he said at the meeting. ‘Our challenges will certainly continue, but so will our resolve to meet them. There is no doubt in my mind — no doubt — our progress will continue.’…Next fall will also see an expansion of Witt’s emphasis on getting students from outside Alabama, who pay roughly three times the tuition as in-state residents. Full-time UA recruiters will be placed in California, Arizona and Colorado. They’ll join recruiters placed around the Southeast and select cities in the Midwest and Northeast the past few years. Witt said money awarded for research increased 15 percent to $65 million in 2008, and, in 2009, research money is 35 percent ahead of last year at this time.
