UA Assists Governor’s Office with Workforce Development, Will Present Study Results this Month

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Three University of Alabama offices are assisting the Governor’s Office of Workforce Development with an analysis of workforce demands for the state and will be presenting results of the study starting April 6.

The recent study by the UA Center for Business and Economic Research, the University Center for Economic Development and the Institute for Social Science Research provides an in-depth, up-to-date analysis of projected workforce demands across the state.

The study includes a statewide report and customized reports for each of the 10 workforce development regions in Alabama. The study was completed in September 2008 and is available on the GOWD Web site at http://www.owd.alabama.gov/downloads.htm

During April, Dr. Sam Addy, director of the Center for Business and Economic Research, Nisa Miranda, director of the University Center for Economic Development, Amy Brabham, associate director of Business and Education Services, Susan Norman, associate director of Field Services, and Tonya Lee, Alabama Department of Industrial Relations-Labor Market Information Division, will be presenting study results to the regional workforce development councils.

The preliminary schedule is as follows: Region 2, April 6 in Huntsville; Region 8, April 8 (morning) in Auburn; Region 7, April 8 (afternoon) in Montgomery; Region 4, April 14 in Birmingham; Region 5 two meetings, April 15 (morning) in Jacksonville and afternoon in Sylacauga; Region 3, April 16 in Tuscaloosa; Region 10, April 20 in Dothan; Region 6, April 21 in Demopolis; and Region 1, April 22 in Muscle Shoals. The presentation for Region 9 has already been conducted.

The Governor’s Office of Workforce Development, under the direction of Dr. Matthew Hughes, was created by Gov. Bob Riley to provide Alabama an efficient and effective workforce development system responsive to current and future needs of individuals and businesses.
