Top Students Honored by UA Graduate School

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Graduate School announced the 2009 Outstanding Graduate Student award recipients during UA Honors Day held earlier this month.

Three committees chose these University-wide recipients out of students who won awards in their individual colleges or schools.

The following students received 2009 UA Graduate School awards:

Frances J. Strong, College of Arts and Sciences, English, received the Excellence in Teaching by a Doctoral Student award.

Tess M.S. Neal, College of Arts and Sciences, psychology, received the Excellence in Research by a Master’s Student award.

Shusei Hamamichi, College of Arts and Sciences, biological sciences, received the Excellence in Research by a Doctoral Student award.

Ross Grimes, College of Arts and Sciences, psychology, received the Outstanding Service by a Graduate Student award.

Dr. Karen J. Cook, College of Communication and Information Sciences doctoral program, received the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation award for “Freedom Libraries in the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer Project: A History.” Her dissertation chairperson is Dr. Margaret S. Dalton, professor in the School of Library and Information Sciences.

Tara Goedjen, College of Arts and Sciences, creative writing, received the Outstanding Master’s Thesis award for “Absence of Oxygen.” Her thesis chairperson is Dr. Wendy M. Rawlings, assistant professor of English.

Laurence Ross, College of Arts and Sciences, creative writing, received the Excellence in Teaching by a Master’s Student award.
