TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama College of Engineering recently awarded John W. Covington III with the 2009 Outstanding Alumni Volunteer Award.
Throughout his career, Covington has demonstrated his love and loyalty to UA by serving on the chemical and biological engineering advisory board, the Capstone Engineering Society Board, and the College’s Leadership Board.
He has been dedicated to each of these boards, serving as the chair of the chemical and biological engineering advisory board since 2004 and as the chair of the Capstone Engineering Society since 2007.
In addition to these advisory roles, Covington has provided assistance and mentorship to graduating chemical engineering seniors through exit interviews. He has been a positive role model for chemical engineering students by presenting interesting problems to the classroom as a guest lecturer.
Covington recognizes the importance of scholarships, and, in 2007, he and his wife established the Linda T. Covington and John W. Covington III Endowed Scholarship. He also was instrumental in leading the chemical engineering alumni in an effort to establish the Gary April Endowed Scholarship.
These notable contributions help not only the department of chemical and biological engineering but also the College of Engineering in attracting the best and brightest students.
Covington received his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from The University of Alabama in 1972. In 1987, Covington was inducted as a Chemical Engineering Outstanding Fellow, and, in 2003, he was inducted as a Distinguished Engineering Fellow by The University of Alabama College of Engineering.
Covington resides in Millersville, Md., where he is the founder and chief executive officer of Chesapeake Consulting Inc., a company that provides creative solutions to organizational business problems.
In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s fully accredited College of Engineering has about 2,300 students and more than 100 faculty. In the last seven years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater scholars, Hollings scholars and Portz scholars.
