EVENTS, ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Ring Week 2009 will be Feb. 2–6 outside the SUPe Store in the Ferguson Center. UA students and alumni can meet with representatives from Balfour each day from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. This is an opportunity to see the rings up close, have your finger sized and ask questions about the Official Ring program. Capstone Creed Week: Honesty, Fairness and Respect Dodgeball Tournament will be held Feb. 6 from 7–10 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center. Teams of five will compete, and all team members must arrive by 6:30 p.m. You may bring fans and wear any kind of uniform. There is no entry fee, and admission is free with you ACTion Card. The Collegiate Politicians will host “My President is Black…but What Now?” on Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. in 30 Alston Hall. This forum will focus on our new president’s implications on our future. The panel will consist of a select group of professors and student leaders. After the forum, a question and answer session will be held. Khaled Abu Toameh will speak Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in 300 Ferguson Center. Toameh is an award-winning Israeli-Arab journalist who has reported on the West Bank and Gaza Strip for more than 20 years. He has an insider’s knowledge of the workings of the Palestinian Authority and has built a reputation for unique and brave reporting. Come hear about the events occurring in Israel. African-American scholar and author Jerry W. Ward Jr. will be on campus Feb. 4-5. Ward will read from his book The Katrina Papers: A Journal of Trauma and Recovery at 4 p.m., Feb. 4 in 205 Gorgas. Also, a photography exhibit of images captured by Brice Miller, assistant director of Crossroads Community Center, upon his return to New Orleans after Katrina will be on display in Maxwell Hall during Ward’s visit. Ward and Miller will share personal reflections from Katrina at noon on Feb. 5 in 301 Morgan. The event is sponsored by Creative Campus Initiative, University Libraries, New College, Crossroads Community Center, the African American Studies Program, and the Bankhead Visiting Writers Series. Deliberative Discussion: Civic Responsibility will be held Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. in 360 Ferguson Center. Americans today are more concerned with their rights than with their responsibilities as citizens. Join the Blackburn Institute, Freshmen Forum, and NCNW in a discussion on how this topic affects our future. More information: Corrie Harris at 348-6114.

UA Scholarship Date Auction will be Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m. in The Zone at Bryant Denny Stadium. A variety of students, selected from major student organizations on campus, will be auctioned to the highest bidder for a group dinner date. The money raised will be raffled off to the students in attendance of the event in the form of $500 scholarships. Stay tuned to the Crimson White for more details. More information: James Fowler.

The department of environmental concerns is participating in the National Teach-In Feb. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. The National Teach-In on Global Warming will engage more than a million Americans in solutions-driven dialogue. The Teach-In is designed to bring together students and faculty across the various disciplines UA offers to discuss the impact of the environment and climate change on their particular area of expertise. Writing Center Workshop Series. If you need help with MLA style, APA style or grammar and punctuation workshops are available to help you master these important skills. All sessions run on Fridays from 3–4 p.m. in the Writing Center, 121 Wilson. Sessions will feature a mix of lecture, discussion and writing. No appointments required. “What if I Don’t Get in the First Time?” will be held Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. in 312 Ferguson Center. The Minority Association of Pre-Health Students (M.A.P.S.) invites you to come discover ways to perfect your application if you are not accepted to Medical, Dental, Optometry, Pharmacy, or Nursing school upon your first application. Information will also be provided concerning gap-year possibilities for students who wish to take a year or more off before applying. STUDENT AFFAIRS

Nominations for the 2009 Last Lecture Award sponsored by the Graduate School are now being accepted. Both undergraduate and graduate students as well as alumni are invited to nominate the faculty member from whom they would most like to hear a lecture delivered on this premise: “If this were your last chance to talk to a group of UA students, what would you say to them?” Students and alumni are invited to submit their nomination by completing the online form. Applications for SGA Executive Office and Senate are now available online. The deadline to apply is Feb. 11. Questions regarding the campaign process or forms can be sent to sgaelections@sa.ua.edu.

The SGA Student Judicial Board is now accepting applications for the 2009-2010 Board. They are seeking dependable, punctual, fair-minded undergraduate, graduate and law students. The Board adjudicates cases arising from student non-academic misconduct and parking violations. All applicants must be available during fall and spring semesters to attend Judicial Board every Tuesday at 6 p.m. Applications can be found on the SGA Web site. They are due Feb. 24. The Pre-Law Student Association meets every Tuesday at 6 p.m. in 121 Bidgood Hall. Anyone interested in attending law school is invited to come interact with other students who share the same interests through activities like the mock trial team, LSAT prep sessions and much more. The Elliot Society has extended its deadline for applications until Feb. 16. The Elliot Society is dedicated to social justice and membership into the society is one of the highest honors at UA. Any current student is eligible to apply. More information: Carl A. Elliot Society or Lorie Box.

The Washington Center will host an information session on Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. Kim Franklin from The Washington Center will be on campus to discuss internship opportunities in Washington, D.C. All majors are welcome. More information: Tiffany Goodin at 348-5848.

Applications for the College of Arts and Sciences Ambassadors are now available for the 2009–2010 academic year. The 25 ambassadors represent the college in a variety of recruitment and development capacities. Applications are available online and are due to the reception desk at Clark Hall by 4 p.m. Feb. 18. ASSCA applications are now available in the Reese Phifer Rotunda. All students with a major or minor in the College of Communication and Information Sciences are invited to apply for membership into the Alabama Student Society for Communication Arts. ASSCA members are the official ambassadors for the College. You must have a GPA of 3.0 in your C&IS classes and a 2.5 overall GPA.
