Join friends at the Mardi Gras Ball Feb. 17 from 8 p.m.-midnight at the Zone. Tickets are $10 for an individual and $15 for a couple when purchased in advance. Tickets will be $5 more at the door. Proceeds will benefit Tuscaloosa’s One Place. Music will be provided by The Birmingham Seven. Dress is semi-formal. More information: Margaret Raleigh.

The Ferguson Center will host the fourth annual Hip Hop Summit: “Expressing the Nation” Feb. 16-19. Events, which are free and open to the public, will focus on and celebrate hip hop’s influence on different countries. More information: LaToya Scott at 348-9958.

‘Race, Politics and the Media in the Age of Obama’ will be Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. in 125 ten Hoor. Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford will discuss the state of race, politics and the media in the age of President Barack Obama. This event is hosted by the Capstone Association of Black Journalists. Crossroads Community Center invites participation in the observance of African-American Heritage Month events throughout February. More information: http://uanews.ua.edu/anews2009/jan09/african012909.htm.

African-American History of Tuscaloosa Tours will be Feb. 22 at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 pm. Tours will meet at Foster Auditorium. Learn about the African-American heritage of Tuscaloosa in this hour-long walking and bus tour. Tickets are $5 and must be purchased in advance through the SGA office. The department of theatre and dance presents the Alabama Repertory Dance Theatre’s spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 17-19 and 5:30 p.m. Feb. 20 in Morgan Auditorium. Tickets: $15 for adults, $13 for UA faculty, staff and senior citizens, and $10 for students. Tickets can be bought from noon to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday at the box office in Rowand-Johnson Hall, by visiting www.crimsonartstickets.com or by phoning 348-3400.

Capstone International Center invites faculty, staff and students to its International Coffee Hour, Friday, Feb. 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in 121 B.B. Comer Hall. Coffee Hour will be sponsored by Transportation Services.

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Academic Advising Roundtable will be held Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. All students are invited to join academic advisors, deans and other faculty for a roundtable discussion about the process of academic advising. More information: Meg McCrummen.

Nominations are being accepted for the Capstone’s Academic Advisor Excellence Award. The award will be given to either a faculty advisor or a professional advisor who has made significant contributions to the field of academic advising. STUDENT AFFAIRS

The Writing Center is offering an interactive workshop on grammar and punctuation Friday, Feb. 20 at 3 p.m. in 121 Wilson Hall. This session will feature a mix of lecture, discussion and writing. No appointments or reservations are required. More information: Dr. Luke Niiler at 348-9460.

The University Stewards is accepting new member applications. University Stewards are committed to helping UA admissions counselors recruit top students from around the nation by creating personal relationships with prospective students and their families. Applications are available at www.uastewards.com. Applications should be returned to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions in 203 Student Services by 3 p.m. Feb. 27.

The SGA Student Judicial Board is now accepting applications for the 2009-2010 Board. The board is seeking dependable, punctual, fair-minded undergraduate, graduate and law students. The board adjudicates cases arising from student non-academic misconduct and parking violations. All applicants must be available during fall and spring semesters to attend Judicial Board every Tuesday at 6 p.m. Applications can be found on the SGA Web site. They are due Feb. 24. Applications for the College of Arts and Sciences Ambassadors are now available for the 2009-2010 academic year. The 25 Ambassadors represent the college in a variety of recruitment and development capacities. The Off-campus Housing Fair will be Feb. 25 from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on the main floor of Ferguson Center. Stop by and speak with a variety of rental property representatives from the local area. More information: Julie Elmore at 348-9647.

The Crimson Gamers Institute is hosting a 75-man computer LAN party Feb. 23 at 2:30 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Ballroom. Student admission is free. Food and drinks will be provided. Students must bring their own computers, monitors, headphones and a network cable. More information: www.bamalan.com.

The Alabama Museum of Natural History’s newest exhibit, ‘Crimson Green,’ is now open on the first floor atrium gallery of Smith Hall. This exhibit explores the different facets of our environment and how we affect them. The exhibit will run for about six months. Each paid adult visitor will receive a free cloth shopping bag while supplies last. You also may become of a fan of the Alabama Museum of Natural History on Facebook to keep updated on events at the museum. More information: Michael Dressler at 348-5625.
