SGA elections to be online

For the first time, SGA elections will be decided not in voting booths but on computers campus-wide. Casting a ballot is now only a mouse click away. Instead of having voting booths at the Ferguson Center and the Student Recreation Center, SGA elections this year will occur entirely online through myBama…The decision was reached by the Elections Board, which is a committee of students and faculty that oversees the election process. They presented the idea to Vice President of Student Affairs Mark Nelson and have coordinated with the Office of Information Technology…Polls will be open on Tuesday, March 2 and Wednesday, March 3. After logging into myBama with their username and password, students will see a “Vote Here” button on the main page of myBama. This button will take them to the online ballot. Write-in candidates will still be an option. To ensure security, the voting process is being handled through a third-party company, Big Pulse, that specializes in online voting…

PR program in top 5 in the country

The University’s public relations program was named one of the top five public relations programs in the country by PRWeek Magazine, according to a press release released by UA media relations…The other four universities that were named in the top five include Georgetown, James Madison, New York University and University of Southern California…

Hunger, homeless addressed next week

The annual Hunger and Homelessness Week, sponsored by the UA Community Service Center, will take place next week from Monday to Friday in order to raise awareness of poverty in Alabama and get students involved through five days of events…The week starts Monday with volunteer opportunities to help restore and remodel the facilities at Jesus Way Shelter. Tables will also be set up in the Ferguson Center to collect items for “Hobo Bags,” canvas bags printed with the “hobo symbol” for the Clean Water Safe Camp Project…On Tuesday, volunteers will be able to serve at the West Alabama Food Bank putting together brown bag lunches that will be dispersed to various soup kitchens in Tuscaloosa. Students will also have the opportunity to serve as volunteers at the Salvation Army and Temporary Emergency Services. Wednesday, students are invited to visit University Presbyterian Church to participate in the Empty Bowls Campaign…The fourth event of the week will be The Grate American Sleep Out, which will take place on the Student Recreation Center fields this year…The final event of the week will be a concert put on by Jason and the Wreck at Little Willie’s. All proceeds from this event will go to the Clean Water Safe Camp Project…
