Train speeds increase. As of Dec. 27, 2008, locomotives operated by Norfolk Southern Corp. have been traveling between 10 and 20 mph faster through Tuscaloosa railroad crossings. At three crossings — 26th Avenue East, 19th Avenue (Kicker Road) and Sixth Avenue East — the normal 25 mph limit has increased to 45 mph. Speeds have gone from 25 mph to 35 mph at nine other crossings, including Hackberry Lane, Greensboro Avenue and Hargrove Road. The railroad gates have been technologically upgraded to ensure the 15- to 20-second warning window remains at all the crossings. Students, faculty and staff on campus may contact MAP at 348-0121 (8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday) or 348-9494 (4:30 p.m.-8 a.m. weeknights and weekends) for free motorist assistance if you need to have a battery jumped off, if you run out of gas or if you need air in your tires.
