King’s dream, Obama’s change enhance weekend celebrations

…“I think there’s a sense around the world that there’s change on the horizon,” said Samory Pruitt, vice president of community affairs for the University of Alabama and chairman of the “Realizing the Dream” committee. “It’s interesting that the change is consistent with the ideals that Dr. King possessed. It’s an interesting time in the world’s history, I think.” The 20th annual “Realizing the Dream” concert, which celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day, will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Moody Music Building Concert Hall at UA. “What we’ve tried to do with this program over the last 20 years is to reflect where we are as a community in regards to race relations,” Pruitt said. The program will feature seven local choirs. Tuscaloosa Citywide Middle School Honor Choir, Shelton Singers, Stillman College Choir, Prentice Concert Chorale will perform, as well as three choirs from UA: the Afro-American Gospel Choir, University Singers and University Chorus…Clayborne Carson, professor of history and director of the King Papers Project at Stanford University, will share his views on the global impact of King’s work…

UA students study abroad in Cuba

This semester, for the first time in the University’s history, a group of students will go to Havana, Cuba, for a study abroad program. Under Michael Schnepf, director of Alabama in Cuba and Spanish professor at the University, 11 undergraduate students will be spending three and a half months studying at the University of Havana…All of the students are undergraduates who are either majoring or minoring in Spanish, Schnepf said, and each student will be taking four classes including one Cuban culture class and one course with Schnepf in which they will be required to keep a written journal and take pictures…
UA to host entrepreneur competition

Alabama’s young entrepreneurs will have a chance to win cash awards at a University of Alabama-sponsored business plan competition in November. A panel of venture capitalists, successful entrepreneurs and angel investors will provide feedback and prize money to aspiring college-aged business owners during the inaugural Alabama Elevator Pitch and Business Plan Competition. The Alabama Entrepreneurship Institute at the University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Commerce will host the event. The competition is open to all college and university students in Alabama. The first round of submissions is due Oct. 1. The final round of the competition is at the University of Alabama Nov. 14. Organizers of the event plan to hold it annually.
