New UA advisors assigned to ease transferring

Bevill State Community College is one of only a handful of community colleges in the state to receive transfer advisers from the University of Alabama to help students transition easily to a university after attending Bevill. Kim Ennis, assistant to the dean for student services, said there were 12 recent University of Alabama graduates assigned to the Transfer Advising Corps, which is a member program of the National College Advising Corps funded by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Guide Program…

The University of West Alabama’s most recent partnership with the University of Alabama provides a model for other universities in the state…The partnership will allow students from the Black Belt an opportunity to earn an engineering degree while remaining near their homes for their first three years of study. Granted, UWA could have pushed state officials to create a school of engineering in Livingston, but that would have created duplication, running up the costs of higher education in a state already struggling to prop erly fund its colleges and universities. For its part, UA showed wisdom and concern for Black Belt students by reaching out to UWA…

Blacks registering to vote at faster rate this year

…Lanoue said their goal was to defeat Hillary Rodham Clinton in the early Southern primaries — something they accomplished in Alabama. But primaries and general elections are two different things in Alabama. The last time a Democratic presidential candidate carried Alabama in the general election was Jimmy Carter in 1976. Lanoue expects Republican John McCain to keep Alabama a red state on Nov. 4. “It’s very unlikely Obama could win Alabama,” he said.
