Homecoming Queen Announced at UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Caroline Gwaltney of Alexander City was named The University of Alabama Homecoming Queen for 2008 on Friday, Oct. 31 during UA’s annual Homecoming Pep Rally on campus.

She is a senior majoring in journalism.

The following students were chosen to be members of the 2008 UA Homecoming Court:

Caroline Ball, an applied mathematics major from Glenview, Ill.

Patty Ann Green, a communication studies major from Columbus, Miss.

Phillips Thomas, an international studies major from Anniston

Maegan Wrenn, an accounting major from Gadsden

UA students selected the queen in a general campus election held Oct. 28. A record number of 4,627 students voted in this year’s election. The queen is crowned during halftime of the homecoming football game, Alabama vs. Arkansas State on Saturday, Nov. 1.

The Homecoming Choreography Contest took place Thursday, Oct. 30 with winners:

1st place-Alpha Chi Omega, 2nd place-Chi Omega, 3rd place-Delta Zeta, Most Original-Alpha Gamma Delta.

Lawn Decorations winners included: Greek Organizations 1st place-Delta Zeta, 2nd place-Gamma Phi Beta, 3rd place-Chi Omega; Academic Organizations 1st place-Computer-Based Honors, 2nd place-College of Communication and Information Sciences, 3rd place-College of Arts and Sciences Ambassadors.

Paint the Town Red competition winners included: Organizations with more than 100 members 1st place-Alpha Delta Pi, 2nd place-Alpha Omicron Pi, 3rd place-Alpha Gamma Delta, Organizations with fewer than 100 members 1st place-Computer-Based Honors Program, 2nd place-NAACP, 3rd place-Theta Tau.

The Homecoming Service Project this year will benefit the RISE Center, located on the UA campus. During Homecoming week, organizations worked to help the RISE Center by donating children’s books to be used by children at the center. Some 1,782 books were collected for the center.
