ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Starting Sept. 14, students may use the Eric and Sarah Rodgers Library for Science and Engineering 24 hours a day for four days a week. University Libraries is joining with SGA and Auxiliary Services to conduct a pilot project testing 24-hour library service during the fall semester. Rodgers Library will open at 1 p.m. on Sundays and remain open until 2 a.m. Friday mornings. Access to Rodgers Library between midnight and 7:45 a.m. will be restricted to faculty, staff and students who have a current Action Card.

The College of Education Ambassadors Program is accepting applications for the 2008-2009 year through Sept. 19. Nominees must be full time students in the College of Education with at least 24 credit hours completed and an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher. EVENTS, ARTS, & CULTURE

A Community Conversation with Norman Fischer, poet and Zen Buddhist priest, will be held Sept. 10 from 3:30-5 p.m. at Crossroads Community Center, 232 Ferguson Center. More information: www.creativecampus.ua.edu.

Sustained Dialogue is recruiting participants. Through Sustained Dialogue, students participate in groups that discuss important social issues and work toward addressing these issues. More information: www.sdbama.org.

In cooperation with the Blackburn Institute, Crossroads Community Center will present Real Talk. These intercultural discussions offer an opportunity to share experiences in an open and supportive atmosphere. Discussions are Monday evenings, Sept. 15, 22 and 29, from 5:30–6:30 p.m. in the Anderson Room of the Ferguson Center.

STUDENT AFFAIRS

Know your stuff! Keep an inventory of valuable possessions and record serial numbers. You will find a form to help you at http://police.ua.edu/index.html and look for the Operation ID Form on the left side of the page.

Recycling tent volunteers are needed for all home football games. The SGA needs volunteers to distribute recycling bags and to work the UA recycling tent on the Quad. Volunteer shifts will be three hours each, but times will vary from game to game. More information: Justinn Trott at 205-288-7112.

Marr’s Field Journal, UA’s undergraduate literary and arts magazine, will have its first meeting Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. in 360 Ferguson Center. All students interested in becoming staff members are encouraged to attend. In addition, Marr’s Field Journal is accepting submissions for this year’s issue. MFJ accepts poetry, prose, art and original music compositions. E-mail mfj@sa.ua.edu with your submissions attached. Include your name, e-mail address, mailing address and phone number. An information session for the 2nd Annual Capstone Sales Competition will be held Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. in 377 Bidgood. This competition allows students to win scholarships, represent UA in a national competition (all expenses paid) and attend training with recruiters of Fortune 500 companies. The Graduate Student Association is hosting its first Non-Traditional Student Fair on Sept. 16 from 6–8 p.m. on the second floor of Ferguson Center. If you are a returning student who is married or has children this fair will have resources for you. More information: Sy Pryor at 348-8562.

Check your stress. The Counseling Center will be providing free stress screenings and free snacks for students Sept. 16 from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Anderson Room. More information: Jen Turner at 348-3863.

Project Health will host its new member meeting Sept. 16 at 5:45 p.m. in the Anderson Room of Ferguson Center. Project Health will begin planning health awareness and education events, as well as the Student Health Fair. Everyone is invited to come. More information: Michelle S. Harcrow at 348-6447.

The College of Communication and Information Sciences’ 13th Annual Communications Career Fair will be held Sept. 25 from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. in the Ferguson Ballroom. Workshops on sports communication and media sales also will be offered. More information: Tiffany Schwarz at 205-239-7964.
